M1 Carbine in CMP Garand Match?
« on: March 11, 2003, 06:59:23 AM »
I have used M1 Garands and 03Springfields in our local Garand Matches, and they work fine.

I had the recent opportunity to pick up an M1 Carbine, Other than collecting I really dont't have a use for one, and I was wondering how they would do in a Garand Match, where they are also legal to use.

I am not looking to poking out the X-ring, but I would like to be able to keep them in the black.

Has anyone used one? Will they be able to keep a 3 inch group at 100 yards and a 6 inch group at 200 yards?

Also, how would they stand up for a home defense gun?

Carbines in a Garand match

Deerhunter:  you may not get the accuracy you want from a carbine.  Unless you find one that is brand spanking absolutely, unquestionably, undeniably and without a doubt new, your accuracy may not be what you want.  My sister got one a few yers ago that, for all intent and purposes, was brand new.  The stock was perfect, the parkerizing untouched, the bore pristine.  But even with new ammo it would not group better than 2 inches at 50 yds, which makes for 4" at 100 and 8 at 200.  Maybe it was the ammo.

We used those things in Vietnam, for close range housecleaning.  Unless we had a couple on the berms with us and knew that even if we missed the guy we were aiming at we might get the one next to him, we would opt in favor of either the M-16, the Car-15 or, my preference - the AK.

If you can find one and test fire it for accuracy with new ammo, and if it works and groups the way you want it to, go for it.  If not, you won't be happy with the accuracy.  What you must consider is that they have not been made for almost 40 years, and many of those left around or for sale have seen some extensive use.  Go lightly when shopping for this mil-surp.

As a home defense weapon it is a fine choice.  The round will penetrate through and through with ball ammo but it is easy enough to shoot for multiple shots.  New PMC ammo with a 110 grain softpoint is a much better option.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

Mikey is RIGHT-ON again!

That M1 Carbine and ball ammunition is strictly a plinker-quality weapon.  Typical groups at 100 yards are fist-sized clusters.  If you are a good shot, you can reliably centerpunch a man-sized target at 200 yards.  A properly mounted telescope and bedded stock will make groups about 2/3 that size.

The NYPD bank robbery squad used to have M1 Carbines loaded with softpoint 110 grain ammo, and for ambush use against robbers they swore it put a man down faster than any pistol bullet (NYPD was equipped with .38 spls and 9mm back in the 1970's).

On the other hand, I've known several vietnam era vets that survived .30 M1 Carbine hits.  At distances much over 100 yards, the ball round has trouble penetrating web belts and ammo pouches.  The ball round is not much, but in SP horm, it is a sure killer on jackrabbits, coyotes, and small deer.

The only weapon my father forbid me to own was a M-1 carbine.  He said it lacked knockdown power and accuracy.  Having spent 43 years in the Army, two years as a paratrooper in the Korean War he based his opinion on personal use and told me he dropped the carbine down a well in Korea after he secured a M-1 Rifle.
