F-150 opinions???
« on: January 05, 2006, 05:48:35 PM »
Dumping my POS 99 Dodge diesel. What a waste of money.  I don't and won't pull anything serious for a few years so don't need the diesel anyway, this thing has been nothing but trouble so debating a gasser.  Either a year or so old Tundra or an F-150 of the newer body style.

The Tundra speaks for itself, but anyone have one of the newer F-150s like an 04, 05, or an 06??? Haven't heard much but what I have heard is all positive. Wondering about mpg, reliability, etc.

Thanks,

RR

Every thing is great about the 150 except the fuel milage. The new 150's with the new 5.4 3 valve engine, 4x4, will get about 13mpg. Thats what every one I know that has one tells me. I have an 03 super crew that gets 15mpg with the old 5.4 engine in a 2wd.   KN

My dad's company truck gets the same 14 MPG no matter what. Bottom line if you want anykind of decent fuel economy your gonna have to give up on the full sized trucks.

Thanks guys.  I have a virtually new 03 Chev Silverado thats a company rig, with the little V8 in it (5.2 or I guess they call it the new 327), 4x4, auto, etc., it averages 15 mpg city and hwy, but I have attained 18 mpg on a 700 mile round trip one time. I am no a big Chev fan, but 26000 miles and only one steering shaft just replaced yesterday........

I wish this Dodge was put together better, I regret ever buying it in the first place, but the mileage can be really awesome if I can keep FREAKING lift pumps in it.......they start to go, down goes the power and the mileage. I'll miss the mileage and the towing power (the trans is going too of course) but for now a gasser is what I need to do.

Kinda funny, you watch CNN and all the terrorists, locals, and our guys seem to run around Afghanistan and Iraq in Toyotas.......

Why not just get a FASS like I did and forget about the lift pump problems?

I had a Dodge 4x4 and your right about the "No" gas milage. I`ll say one thing for that old Dodge it would pull anything...... out of anything.
When i pulled my bass boat i had to cover up the fuel guage.....it dropped so fast you thought it had a hole in the tank. With out the boat it got about 13-15 MPG. Maybe.
Now i`ve got a Ford 150 small 8. Much better gas mileage(18-20 mpg)
plus when i pull the boat it still gets around 15. I`m satisfied.
   Plus, it rides great.
Where i live it`s mostly flat so the small 8 does just fine but if i lived in hill country i might go for a bigger 8.  IMO

I was a member of the Turbodiesel Register for years.......maybe this is where you learned about the FASS? I agree, a pusher pump is BRAIN DEAD SIMPLE the answer to the lift pump problem.  That's why big rigs have them. DUH.  I am just tired of paying good money for a truck that should never have had these problems in the first place......check it out:

4 LIFT PUMPS

2 INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFTS

2 FAULTY FUELTANK SENDING UNITS

2 TRACK BARS, FINALLY REPLACED WITH MY OWN MONEY WITH A 3RD GEN ONE

STEERING ALL OVER THE ROAD, REPLACED WITH THE DSS=$$$ AND STILL WANDERS, PULLS, ETC

MILEAGE GOING SOUTH AGAIN......now what.

2 POWER STEERING/HYDRAULIC PUMP REPLACMENTS

2 LEAKY REAR DIFF SEALS

2 Throttle position sensors

1 crankshaft position sensor + emergency tow

Trans going but dealer won't fix unless it grenades on me.

I have the dreaded "53" engine block, but truck isn't turned up so who knows......

2 LEAKY TRANSFER CASE ISSUES.......last time (GET THIS) they didn't replace all the bolts or left them untorqued.....went on a 700+ mile hunting trip, 100 miles of which was nutbustin' nasty...in 4x4 the entire time; trans case making noise. Get home, put truck in 4x4 to take care of something, ENTIRE TRUCK starts shaking, loudest banging imaginable--like a washing machine run wild. Shut it down.....crawl under,          ONE LOOSE BOLT holding front shaft to trans case, thus making it turn like a crankshaft. Broke my trans case IN HALF.    Stealership fought me on this but in the end they ate it.

All this in 50,000 miles.  The extended warranty has more than paid for itself and it runs out soon. I'm done. No more. As you can see by the mileage the truck sits a lot, its my weekend warrior these days. Time to dump it, get a work type rig in a gasser configuration and move on.

Well Rogue, it does sound like you got hold of a bad one. I agree these problems should have been addressed by Dodge in the first place. I have an 01.5 with some aftermarket goodies and the fuel turned WAY  up and have had no problems, heck I am still on the factory VP44.
Back to your question, My opinion on the F150 (my youngest brother has an 05) pretty good truck, super weak powertrain. Also keep in mind ford is notorious for inflating hp/trq ratings.

Can't go wrong with the Tundra.  Our company owned '01 has 160,000 on it and never been in the shop.  Been through 2 sets of brakes but that's it.  Runs like a new one.  Can't wait to see the 2007 redesign.

Have a Dodge 1500 4x4 quad cab hemi bought in Dec 04. This is the only vehicle I have ever owned in my life that I have not had a single problem with. The truck now has over 44,000 miles. Maybe I should quit saying this - knock on wood.

Check out the fleet price of an F-150 super crew direct from Ford to the Government!!!

"This is an example of one of the F-150Â’s I recently ordered.

4x4 pickup, full size, crew cab, min 6700 lbs GVWR, V8/4.6L

(base vehicle includes -  remote keyless entry, carpeted floors, power windows/door locks, AM/FM CD, etc.)

Options Ordered:

·       Adjustable pedals
·       Special traction differential
·       Towing/mountain ratio
·       Delete daytime running lights
·       Dark tinted glass
·       Upgraded engine (V8/5.4L)
·       Running boards
·       Tow Package
·       Reclining bucket/captain chairs

 Manufacture Selling Price = $23,395.00

We have to pay a 1% fee for their work which brings our total to:  $23,628.95"

No one will come close to this price. So far no dealer will go below $27,000.  With gas prices the way they are I wonder if prices will fall.

My father just picked up an F150 during the summer.  So far it has been good to him.  His last truck got him 450000 km so hopefully this one does him the same :P

I am also looking for a new to me truck so I called a friend of mine the Ford dealership. H e works in the parts department, He told me as long as I bought an 04 or older, I would be fine, but do not under any circumstances get a newer truck. I asked him would it get the 20 mpg that our Tahoe, he said flatly NO way. I really like the 4 door of the Ford, but looks like I will go with Chevy again.

'05 Suburban 1500 5.3L Loaded, 4x4, 80-85 mph on autobahn from Stuttgart to Brussels and back last weekend averaged right at 16.5 mpg with 5 adults and one child and some luggage.  Not on cruise, since the traffic really doesn't allow for it over here.  Can't complain too much but wish it had a 5 speed auto instead of the 4 speed, might pick up another mile or two.

Fixed -
two intermediate steering shafts
wiring harness for engine
seat heater quit working (mandatory for wife...)
all under warranty...

Ever since Ford decided to start advertising in gay magazines, and backing their agenda I wouldn't buy a Ford if it were the last vehicle on earth, period.  I hope the new Tundra drives down F-150 sales to the bottom.

I had a F150 that was a great truck. I decided to go diesel (3/4 ton) and believe the Cummins is much better than what Ford offers.
Forget the engine I liked the F150 better. Consider the engine I like my Ram

I have owned Ford trucks of one kind or another for the last 25 years--oh my lord--and have had good service from them.
The F-150 four doors are the best of the lot I have owned.
I am not one that requires a 4X4, so I have no opinion of them.
I do prefer the 5.4 too the small V-8's though and have found the gas milage to be no different from one too the other.
This summer in a 6200 mile trip--Expedition, with the big V-8-- at highway speeds of 80-90 mph (Col., Wy, Idaho, Montana, NM), in the mountains, doing slow (40mph) touring in a lot of parks, I got an honest 17MPG. The truck was loaded with luggage and for a good deal of the time there was four of us and the extra luggage.
I was very pleased.
My F-150's have been kind to me and one I kept for 10 years---wish I still had that old step-side, in a way.
Blessings

We use a new f-150 at work and it rides surprisingly well. I took it to cleveland a couple of weeks ago and it rode great. I uised to own a ford and got tired of putting slave cylinders in the clutch. I went to dodge and haven't been really happy with that either. Although I agree it will pull "anything out of anywhere." Even with todays global market I can't see myself buying an import, maybe I'll try gm next.

I have a brand new left over '05 F150 XL longbed regular cab...
5.4 Triton V8
4:10 rearend
Manual seats/locks/windows/mirrors (kinda like old school meets new school)
40/20/40 cloth seats
Rubber floors
Automatic
Single CD player
Factory tow package with extra cooling
17 inch steel wheels/tires
Fog lamps in bumper

4,000 miles on it so far without a problem...milage ain't that great (around 14 mpg city) but its a solid truck to drive.
Its hard to keep my foot out of the throttle with that 5.4 humming under the hood.
You can get better milage with a good bed cover...a K&N filter FIPK system...and a good catback system (All I plan to get this summer)
I'm happy.... ;D

Thought I posted this but guess not: 06 Silverado 1500 4x4 Z71 package, 5.3 engine, auto, extended cab, power seats, etc etc.......LT1 package maybe (can't recall what they call it) one step below fully adjustable seats and Bose sound, about $23500 out the door including $400 worth of free gas.

Ford wouldn't come close. 4000 miles on it now. Don't like the ground clearance much. Issue with extended cab doors not working right. 14mpg all around. 19 on LONG highway trip of 1500 miles or so. Oh yes, for ME big mistake not getting fully adjustable seats, recent back/neck injury causing trouble. Other than that, no issues, nice ride.

Just an update.......
