Did some reading the other night about Wheeler engineering Cerama-coat bake on finish. Over the past few years I've seen some of Brownells spray on, bake on finishes and did'nt know what to really think of them. One guy I talked with said he did not like a particular brand that Brownells sold. What I was reading about this new Cerama-coat said it went on flaw-less and was pretty much scratch resistant. Was thinking about re-doing a stainless barrel. Has anyone out there tried it?

I would just have it glass beaded or blasted with fresh, I mean brand new alum. oxide. It will take the shine down to a very matte finish and will not be noticeable at all.

I've used Cermicoat on a couple of guns. I have been very satisfied with the results. The finish sprays on easily and drys quickly between coats. The finished product looks like black parkerization. It will absorb and hold oil like parkerization also. I cannot really testify as to how durable it is, because none of the guns I've refinished have had any hard use yet.

Since I've done these guns I've found another cermic based flat black bake on finish at Autozone. It is desinged for engine parts, but apears to be essentially the same except you get three times as much in the can for half the price. I have not tried this new one yet.

To each his own but I disagree with the basic premise from which you're starting out.

That is that SS actions are some how more shiny or of more concern to a hunter than a blued action. In my opinion and experience it's just the opposite. Most (not all) are a bead blasted finish and thus actually less reflective than a highly polished blue finish. And the lighter color more closely matches the predominate tree/limb color of the woods in which I hunt than does a blued barrel.

I only hunt with SS guns, just don't take any others to the woods anymore.

I agree with Graybeard on this one!

I hunt with a few guys who carry stainless steel rifles and to me, a "high-gloss" blue rifle sticks out like a sore thumb!
The stainless seems to match surroundings quite well, especially snow!

Shiney is just that and color doesn't matter. I took a synthetic sanding pad to my Ruger barrel after several deer seasons with no problem with the deer's opinion of it. I just like dull finshes.

I have hunted deer for many years and can't remember spooking any with the shine of a rifle.. Turkeys are a different story! Still the attention/alarm color for a whitetail is white and light colors attract attention in a dark woods. I really have no preference other than from an esthetic standpoint.

I guess I just like dark color to my barrel. Bead blasted does look pretty good, Have since used the cerama-coat and love the look I have the protection of stainless and the light absorbing dull matte black look that I wanted. I do agree with previous post that polished blue on a bright day sticks out like a sore thumb.

down and dirty.
i did not want the fairly shiny finish on my bfr 45-70 revolver to shine during a bear hunt (blamed that one for a bear seeing me on previous hunt) so i simply spray painted all external surfaces with camo paint.
masked off the cylinder front and rear and sights. worked great. when i was done it wiped off easily with laquer thiner.

Be very careful with lacquer thinner or acetone on any finished wood. Both will damage any finish.. For camo paint paint thinner (stodard's solvent) will work fine..

sorry i didn't elaborate.
bfr is an all stainless revolver (original message was about stainless barrel).
you would never want to do this to any stock or grip parts. just the stainless steel parts.
