Help me out folks. I just bought a sporster in 17hmr. I also picked up a Hoppe's 3 piece steel cleaning rod. First time down the barrel it broke were the jag screws to the rod.  This did not make me very happy so i bought a Tipton. Works great with a dry patch. Soaked a patch in solvent pushed it down the barrel and this broke in the same place as the Hoppe's. They sure are a tight fit. Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong? Or is a rod made that won't do this?  Using the same patches i am using in my Contender and they are the right size for that. HELP ME PLEASE. :o

I have a Dewey .17 cal rod that works great, but due to the wimpy nature of the skinny .17 rod and it flexes so much in the tight bore, specially at the throat, I quit using a rod in my .17hmrs and just use a Patchworm.

I have had the same problem with the rods bending. I think I'm going to a Bore Snake.. Lets see that bend :lol:

I don't know that the boresnake is a real good idea, either. Unless you wash it after each use, you're just dragging the same dirty carbon and powder fouling repeatedly thru the bore. I use em for field cleanning once or twice at most, but not for regular cleaning. It would be the same as reusing cleaning patches, something I doubt most responsible shooters would do.

And here's a horror story that will make anyone think twice about using a boresnake in a Hmr..

Suggestion:  Run the rod through the barrel and out the end.  Then put a patch on it and pull it back through.  It's not so tight a fit, and you are pulling instead of pushing so you won't bend the rod.  Yes you need a needle tip with an eye instead of a reguler jag.  But it will keep from breaking those whippy rods.

I use a 17 Dewey also but the trick is that you need to support the rod not just try to push it through the bore from the breech end.

I use my thumb and middle finger to support the rod with my hand wrapped around the wrist of the stock.  Also have the open action propped up on a bunny bag or something like sandbags about where the trigger guard is.
