i to have shot a few squirrels with my 25mn using 40grain hollow points and it will 'mess' them up pretty bad unless you can take head shots.i have never tried using non hollow points yet,but i wonder if they would be a little more 'meat' friendly than the hollow points?i usually use a .22lr  for squirrell hunting, even a .22lr with hollow points will damage them pretty bad,but not near as bad a.22 mag.

I have used my 22 Hornet on Head Shots with Squirrels. Does a good job gutting them at the same time.

I use a 22lr for squirrels and shoot them in the neck. Don't mess up any meat, slightly bigger kill zone than a squirrels little brain and quick/clean kills. I shoot CCI mini-mag hollow points. On a long shot I will go behind the shoulder. No meat to ruin on those little ribs any ways.

yeah i shoot 'em in the ribs too. i usually try for a head shot if i can, however. my grandpa showed me a way to get all the shoulder meat out of a decent-sized squirrel not long ago, and so now i try not to ruin that meat either.
