Favorite cap and ball revolver?
« on: January 09, 2006, 06:24:37 AM »
In the past I have owned an Armi San Marcos 1847 Walker, a Euroarms 1851 Colt, and an EMF 1858 Remington.

I just bought a Cabelas 1860 Army.  I went with this model as the grip is made for an adult, and it has a nice balance.  I shot a friends 1860 army years ago and liked it, but until I shoot my newest addition I can't make a judgment on it.

The Walker was big and heavy, the cylinder would drag when the fowling got up there, took two hands to hold it.  Accuracy was moody and with heavy loads the loading lever would fall down.  I don't seen owning anther one.  The 1851 Colt was nice, in .36 cal. had good balance, accurate, easy to service.  Grip was a little small for me.

My 1858 Remington was mechanically good, accuracy was moody though.  Spotted a minor defect in the rifling done at the factory assumed that this was the reason for the occasional flyer, but have read that these guns are not as accurate as the Colts.  Grip was a little small, probably should not have sold it.

With the purchase of my new 1860 Army, thinking about getting some more, never had an 1849 Pocket, or a third model dragoon.  Might get another 1851 Colt.

What are your favorites, and the types that you did not think much of?

Thanks.

Well I reckon I ain't an adult as I put the navy drip frame on my army!

I bought a pair of 58's from Cabela's when I got started shooting CAS. One was a tack driver and the other might  hit the cow standing by the side of the barn I was shooting at.    Wellllll,  maybe not that bad but it weren't the same to be sure. Shoot them both for a couple of years and fot rid of the one that didn't shoot so well.
Bought me a almost new 1860 Uberti and loved it. This one's grip doesn't seem as big as the one I switched on my Pietta 1860 snubnose. Just bought a used barrel off ebay for the Ubert and plan on shortening it to make a pair of snubnose 44's to shoot.
But my favorite pair is my 1851 Frontiersman made by Uberti and sold through Navy Arms. These little darlin's are 5" barrel and 36 cal and slick as owl snot right out of the box. Bit pricey as ya got to go through a dealer to get them but I've shot mine for nearly two years and really enjoy them.
Only bad thing I can say about them is they don't like round balls. Tried different powders, volumes of powder and wads but couldn't make them group to save my life. Switched to conicals lubed with 50/50 bees wax and Cresco and ain't looked back since. Others I talked with haven't had this trouble but I sure did.
 Anyhow, that's my favorites.

By far my favorites are my 51' navies, then the 60' armies, and I'm tinkering with a pair of walkers.  If I can get one of the walkers to working rite I'm thinking seariously of adding a dragoon style loading leaver latchs to the both of them.  I do not realy care for the Remmington style guns, just do not like the grip style.  I will play around with reconturing it soon as I get a chance.
