Author Topic: Edwards County Coyotes/Foxes/Wolves/mountain lions???? (Read 1368 times)

Anyone here hunt out in Edwards County, Texas? My family and I hunt about 1700 acres south of Rocksprings. Back on Thanksgiving weekend, my wife and I were sitting on a bluff just watching over a huge oak flat and I saw a really BIG animal, dark Gray in color with a big bushy long tail. Just my luck I didnt have any optics with me, so I couldnt get a good look. My grandmother said there had been a few rumors of coyote and even wolf sightings.

Several years ago I had the... ahem... pleasure of being within about 35 yards of a Mountain Lion while walking to the truck after dark. While bouncing back and forth deciding wether to fire or let it go it turned and pranced off. With my maglite and 3x9 scope, I could see every rib on that kitty... After changing my underwear I told the guy who we lease grazing to who was really mad at me for not shooting it. I'm conserned that if in the same situation with a wolf if I should not shoot. Coyotes are, I believe, ok to shoot during daylight. We've seen foxes out there for years but they're not much a hazard to us.

Anyone out there ever seen or had similar run in's with these critters?

The big cats are there. Last month I was hunting just south of Rocksprings and the people that owned the placed talked about a mountain lion that lives in the bluffs on the property.
In the late '70s hunting south of there in Camp Wood I did see mountain lion tracks in a creek bottom.
We usually kill one or two coyotes during the hunting season on our lease in Bandera.

There are some big cats down there, and bunches of yotes, but I have not heard of any wolfs being in that area. Some people call the coyote a "Mexican Wolf," that may be where the wolf came from. There could also be some feral dogs there.

But, are you ready for this.............there are a lit of porcupines in that area. In low light conditions, they could be taken for a big cat or yota. Just recently I had one on a feeder, at dark, with a bunch of pigs. Yes, thats right, I shot the porcupine thinking it was also a pig........... :roll:

I've seen skunks and mountain lions live and tracks. Lots of hogs. But never a porcupine! And I've hunted that land all my life. I never seen a hog with a tail as long and almost as wide(bushy) as its body.... That's what this had. Kinda creepy. I've seen red foxes, but no coyotes before. That's really gonna bother me when it's after dark and I'm walking back to the truck! :? I'm not afraid of most things out there. Mountain lions, coyotes, hogs and even illegal "hispanic invaders" are usually easily defended against. But a skunk, that's another thing entirely. :lol:

:roll: If I feared anything, it would be the two legged animal that just swam (waded) across the river. I hunted Brewster County for several years, my last trip, the land owned told me to keep a pistol handy all the time, since the illegals had established a highway across his property. He said they would rob you given the opportunity, and would steal anything they could carry off. I understand it is not safe to approach then by yourself, especially if there are more than one any place along the southern part of the US. Maybe the government need to make em legal game and the hunters would stop the mass number of illegals flowing in. :roll: :roll: :roll:

We havn't had much of a problem with em since I was a little kid.
Once when I was about 5 or 6 a gang of em tried to climb in the BroncoII my parents had. That lasted about as long as it took my dad to grab my mom's 30-30(6 shots in the mag instead of 4 from his 308 and faster action cycle) an put two rounds in the dirt in front of em.... even then a couple jumped on the spare tire rack(like we woundn't notice) adn hitch a ride...

The cuttin pen draw which pretty much runs from brackettville to rocksprings, runs pretty much right smack dab through our place. At one time it was a major route for the Moist Marauders.... For years we couldnt keep anything of value(not even blankets) at the Rock shack on the ranch, they'd break in and steal anything and everything.... silverware, pots/pans, you name it.

I couldn't outright mow em down, but if they ever threaten myself or family that that one bunch did........ i just hope it never happens.

:oops: Ahaaaa, I couldn't just gun em down, after all they are just looking for a better way of life. It just chaps my hide that the American taxpayers have to pay for it while many of our folks do with out. They are the cancer that will bring this country down to it's knees left unchecked. :x

Illegals are one of the many many cancers afflicting this great nation we hold dear. WalMart(Darth Vador's Empirial March sounds), credit card debt., un-regulated or controlled offshore outsourcing, coporate greed and/or crime(they're both one and the same), the outright assault on Christians... the list goes on and on. I won't even get into the politcal stuff. Or the contraversial standpoints of the liberal conspiracy to strip America of everything she stands for. Afterall, that's not what this forum was started for.

However, my family is expecting an increase in "traffic" through our place once the fence between Eagle Pass and Del Rio(I think that's it.) goes up. They're just going to go around, which will funnel them far enough north to get through our neck of the woods. The only way a wall will work is if it's coast to coast and infalibly electronically monitored by well armed, trained MILITARY police. That's the only way they'll defend the invasion. My wife overheard me telling my brother that, and now's she's scared to go out there. If you keep you're head down and you're eyes open, you'll be fine. But be prepared to defend you and your family, WHAT EVER IT TAKES. It's our God given right... nay, I say GOD GIVEN RESPONSIBILITY to defend ourselfs and our families.

My friend and excellent hunter, saw what he called a "wolf" at Leakey. I tried to convince him otherwise because there should be no real wolves in Central TX, but he and I use Zeiss binocs and have killed lots of coyotes. He described it as a huge, grey wolf-like critter.
Hopefully, someone will get a photo someday!
