New Savage 7MM-08

Just bought a new Model 14 in 7mm-08.  First range test at 50 yards was not impressive. Kinda dissapointed with the let down of all the hype of Savage out of the box accuracy.  Two inch group at 50 yards is best out of Federal 140 grain factory ammo.  

I will remain optimistic till I get a couple hundred rounds thru it. And of course letting the barrell cool between shots.

Any comments on similar results?

Anything new to report? I have heard nothing but positive reports on the 7mm-08 and Savage in general.

I shot several different rounds through my Savage 7MM-08 when I was breaking the barrel in and did not have that good of groups.  I have since hand loaded and getting 1 MOA with these at 100 yards.  The trigger takes time to get use to , and clean the barrel well.  Go to Savages FAQ page and read the recommended break in section. I'm happy with my synthetic stocked version.

Every gun is a thing unto itself. The same gun model from the same manufacture can like different ammo. Since you tried that Federal ammo, try Remington 140's or a different Federal load or Winchester brand, different bullet weights. I am willing to bet that there at least one factory load that will shoot under 1" at 100 yards out there some where. I hand load my stuff for that very reason. I can try many different velocities, powders, primers and bullets to find a good combination. Factory ammo is more limited, but in a 7-08 there are enough different loads out there that one of them should shoot straight for you.

I have a Stevens 200 7-08 that I had the barrel cut to 18 1/2", groups less than an inch, got my 11 point Kansas buck with it opening morning........

My son's 7-08 Savage shoots my handloads and Winchester silvertips under one inch but does a bit less than 2" with the Winchester power points. Also my Savage model 11 in 308 only shoots 180 gr. handloads to 1.5 inches at best but the 165 gr. and 150 gr are consistant 3/8 " groupers. So as the others have said find some accurate ammo for your rifle. Also make sure scope bases and rings are not loose.
