I wanted a 17 Ack. Imp. Hornet barrel
« on: January 10, 2006, 09:31:13 AM »
I wanted a coupla barrels for our TC Contender Rifles in 17 Ackley Improved Hornet.  What I did was order 2- 17 HMR 23" barrels, a finish reamer from Pacific and 2- 22 Hornet extractors from Thompson Contender.  We rechambered the barrels, deepened the extractor notch and put in the new extractors.  We ended up with about $210 apiece in the barrels, not counting the cost of the reamer.  Now the big expense is brass, bullets, 17 Hornet die set and fireforming.  We deburred the flash holes before we started necking the brass down.  I also "Fire-Lapped" the barrels and now we are getting 5/8" groups with 25 gr. Hornady HP's at 200 yds.  Once I get all the brass fore-formed,  I'll be loading 20 gr. Vmx's and those new 25 gr. Vmx's that Hornady makes.  These little guys really shoot and they are hell on Jackrabbits and Coyotes out to 300 yds.  We've dumped 8 or 9 'Yotes now and they've all been one-shot kills.  I have a feeling the Groundsquirrels will really hate to see us show up next spring.
