Muskrats Eating Eggs?
« on: January 10, 2006, 10:53:24 AM »
Down at a creek near our house there is a huge muskrat-burrow complex which is usually under-water. However, with the drought wev'e been having, it is exposed, so I went to see if there were any muskrats in it. I saw one muskrat :-)  but also a huge stock-pile of what must have been   20-30   duck eggs!!! I thought muskrats only ate plants! :?

Maybe, but I don't think so as it was quite a ways back in the tunnel. Anyway, I thought coons and muskrats didn't get along well together.

Muskrats do eat eggs and usually the embryos of unhatched ducklings, pheasants, etc.  They are probably stored there from some time ago.  Don't crack one, they will probably be smelly.
