Home built range
« on: January 11, 2006, 10:42:15 AM »
I'm sure quite a few people have their own range on their property.  As for me I have to build mine.  I need a few questions answered.  My range will be constructed up a draw.  I already have the distances figured out, but I need some info on back stops.  For the shorter distances I intend to do a bit of terracing and use the ground as a back stop.  My problem arises from the fact that the farthest distance, 225 yds, requires that I use the top of the slope.  I'm a little concerned about a bullet traveling out where it shouldn't.  There are no near by neighbors but I would still rather the bullet stopped before it left the property line.  Currently I was thinking of using 8 inch rail road ties as a back stop.  Will this stop a .223 bullet?  This may sound a bit stupid but I don't want to take chances.  If not are there any suggestions as to what would.  Also if anybody already has a range in place would they be willing to share design ideas?
Thanks
