870's now stink!!!
« on: January 12, 2006, 12:28:42 AM »
I have bought  4  Rem.870 in the past 5 years and they all have the same problem. After I shoot, the dang shell gets stuck in the chamber and I have to smack the butt on the ground to get it out. Remingtons quality has gone to _hit in all of their guns!! Has anyone else had this problem. It has happend to two friends also.  Sean

have a total of five 870's- two older and three newer. They all work like champs. have never had an extraction problem. Have tried the high end shotguns(2 benellis) and am not saying that they arn't great guns, but IMO the 870 is the most reliable shotgun made.  Also have an 11-87 that has never been a problem. cycles well with whatever I run thru it. Had an SP-10 with problems, but the is fixed now.

Did I say the 870 was the most reliable shotgun available

if all of them have the same problem it sound more like an ammo issue to me. a relative of mine had this problem and it turned out he was using relaods and they were smashed down just a bit at the crimp and they had expanded a tiny bit and it kept 'em from coming right out.

I would agree.  i do not think the gun is the problem.  I do own several 870's. Express models and wingmasters.  In super mad, mag and regualer. So I think I have all my bases covered.  Anyway never had a problem with any. :D

Not sure I agree with the ammo problems but it may be..

2 friends bought 870s last year and have the same problems.  They shoot different ammo.  One of the 870s (not an express) has a plastic follower (I hope that is the correct term).  It sticks terribly, especially when the weather is cold.

Too bad as I love all of my 870s and never had a problem.

Gee, I bought 3 Remington rifles this year and have not had a problem with any of the three.  And few things in life are as reliable as a 870.

Wonder how many 870's Remington makes in a year?  How many rifles?

Have you called Remington?  Or are you just making a rant about a single shotgun because you've heard others that want to appear knowledgeable make depreciating remarks about Remington.

I also have bought several Remingtons in the past year.  My personal 870 is 15 years old and is used from seaduck hunting to snowshoe hares.  Never a hiccup.

I was providing input on what I saw from 2 different people buying the same shotgun in 2 different locations within the last 10 months.  Both had the same problem as described by Cobra7.  Is it an epidemic of bad quality control?  I don't know but I'd at least look a little harder at the 870 if I were buying one.

I take it they were all Express models?

Polishing of the forcing cone will take care of your problem. I have not had any with that problem, but know of and have fixed several.

Thanks for all the response. They were all 870 Express Models. One was the 3 1/2 Super Mag. I am glad some of you have seen this problem also. I just bought a Rem. SPS SS in 7mm Mag. over the weekend so I will see how it works. I have always felt the 700 action was the best action you could get in a rifle.  Sean

I also beleive this is more of an ammo problem. I have seen plenty of hang ups with some of the cheaper 3.00 a box win & federal loads from guns of all make that were other wise very reliable in fact I bought some foriegn made (I beleive Tyro) 20 guage ammo that I had to pull every hull from the chambers of my browning O/U

Shells jammed in my 870 express police 3 times within 40 shots fired, all 3 times they were the same 3" federal #8 shot bought from Dicks. I went to Gander and got the same type and they worked fine. Im assuming the batch at Dicks had some faulty product inside a few of the boxes. Its funny too because I only went there because I was in a rush and they were close by. b4 that I hadnt stepped foot in a Dicks in 10 years.

Ive had 3 Express models and 2 Wingmasters over the past 16 years, and none of them have ever conveyed a problem that was not associated with ammunition being used.

I have several 870s all wingmasters I guess.but have seen and been around a slew of the express's.have never seen are heard of the problem described by cobra.EXCEPT when bad ammo was used.living in a very humid area the old paper shells would swell.even the brass base.and that would make extraction hard.he-- it even made loading them in the chamber hard.but cheap as we were we'd git er dun, one at a time..I think the 870 is one of the most reliable pump shotguns made.most would not beleive the torture that I have put two of them through hunting in the jungles of central america both wingmasters in three inch mag.one was a loaner for the natvives if they did not have one to hunt with.whewooh, they took care of it like a redheaded stepchild.they always functioned.leaves, twigs and what ever in the way of the slide bars and bolt, would just get sheared are crushed and the guns would fire. Then you could blow dead deer on your cow horn..great shotguns.heck, you could even blow dead deer out of the barrel and action of the 870s and be heard all over the jungle.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

IT is not a ammo problem. One of my hunting friends bought a almost new 870 and it would bind up trying to extract just as described. We tried every ammo ever made and they all did it. We are no strangers to the 870. Took it apart inspected.. nothing seemed wrong. Swapped out parts with other 870s. Could not find the exact problem. A gun smith looked it over and said he fixed it but didn;t. He finally traded it in.

Finally I find someone with the exact problem I had with my 870 express riot gun!
I put 6 rounds through it in the first week I owned it.  Was BARELY able to extract by bouncing the but on the floor while pulling down on the slide!!!

The base of all 6 rounds was blown out, not ruptured but bellied out.  The fired hull didn't want to go back in the chamber either.  I was going to use this gun for a doorstop or something.  Instead I found an auth. rem repair center and told the smith that I thought it had an oversize chamber or else why would it blow out the cases like that.  He assured me that w/o gunsmith credentials I couldn't make that type of determination!  He would have someone ck it out and get back to me " THANK YOU VERY MUCH"
A week later I got a ups package, my 870 , a return invoice and NO explation.  Everything looked almost the same except the ID number that I put on the barrel extension was missing( must be a different barrel with a correct sized chamber) .  I shot up the rest of that 1st box of shells and got some 3" mag slugs , shot them up and it shoots anything I put in it now. I wish I could say things w/less words
Good Luck Cobra7
