:cb2: I don't know the exact prices, however, you will pay more for the S&W. Of course, you're getting a better gun. Taurus has a "lifetime warranty" but my experience with that means they will keep working on until they finally get it right, but you have to pay $25 bucks or so each time you send it back. After 3 or 4 times you finally get smart and get rid of the gun. I only have 6 Smiths (I know—that's not even a good start), and the only problem I've had so far was caused by a screw that worked its way loose. And they are all accurate guns and great shooters.

So far, the only thing I like that comes from south of the border is the food!

:cb2: Gotta agree with you there. The best thing to ever come out of Brazil was the thong! (Oops! Did I say that out loud? Hope my wife doesn't read this!)

I would go with the Smith. It holds it value better and in my opinion is a better built gun. Sure it cost more but it is well worth it.  :D

S&W vs Taurus
« Reply #6 on: February 03, 2006, 07:44:53 AM »
I find the quality control to be a bit shy on both brands.  Taurus' quality control seems spottier than S&W's on most models, but the Raging Bull is their flagship and they seem to do better on that model.  We hear horror stories about Taurus' repair service, so my advice is to make a d**n good inspection before buying either make.  Guess what I'm saying is that Taurus' quality is about what you hear, but S&W's quality is a bit over rated.

The S&W 29 will be a little rough in the recoil department but easier to pack.  The Raging Bull will tame the recoil but is a larger hunk of iron to pack.  You takes yer choice and plunks down yer buck.

definetly a smith. Even if you do happen to have problems with it and i doubt you will. Smith will take good care of you. They will even send you a free shipping box post paid if you ask. To me its about like comparing a porche to a ford.

Redhawk 1,

Yes, it's only my opinion.  But if you let me know your postal address I can send you the bills for all the crap I've had to have fixed on S&W's.

Seriously, I have owned a LOT of S&W's, and the quality control just isn't all that good.  I've had a number of cases of excess end shake, excess cylinder gap, rattlely cranes, one case of grossly excessive crane endshake, one case of misaligned chambers, all right out of the box.  And almost all S&W revolvers have the hammer dragging on the frame.  And don't get me started about the bolt drag line on the cylinder.  The percentage of revolvers with defects right out of the box has been too high.  Thge quality control is getting better these days, but that's a day too late since they've dropped all the nice looking ones, which is why you buy a S&W to begin with.  The one S&W center fire pistol I owned had too low a front sight so you could not get it on target.

I can show you a lack of quality control with Rugers as well.  I've had problems with Brownings, Colts, etc.  I'm not convinced any of the mass manufactures are doing all that well with quality control.

S&W every time.  Used even.

Here should be a  clickable thumbnail of a good .44 Smith:

That's a little more than an unfortunate run on the S&W's.  Quite different than my experience.  I haven't had a bad one yet.

My 525-7 in 45 colt hotly loaded handily outshoots my FA83.  An the other SW PC .44 was no slouch either.

I currently have a 5" 629 in .44 and it shoots as well as I do when I show up to the range.

Well, as long as everybody is kicking taurus in the dirt... then beating it with a hammer, I might as well help out.  My old man has a S&W .44mag, It looks the same as the one in the picture from Poohgyrr.  I have a taurus RB with a 6.5" barrel, and I prefer my taurus.  It's ported which helps greatly with muzzle climb, and I like the way it shoots better.  The actions are compareable in smoothness and reliability.  I have had absolutely no problems with my RB.  By the way, this is comparing a S&W.44mag, to a RB .454 casull.  Though taurus is spotty with quality in some of its guns, and their CS is horrid, the RB is something they did right.  I would highly recommend it.

Have you considered a Ruger Redhawk?  Not as pretty as a Smith, or even the Taurus, but hell bent for sturdy, and as accurate as any.

+1 on the Dan Wesson. I love the interchangeable barrels. It is also a very large and sturdy frame that helps with Recoil. It is not as pretty as my dad's M29 but it was purchased for shooting and hunting. This ain't going to be a show piece.
