Custom Handi barrel

Has anyone here just cut the barrel lug off a handi barrel and welded it to another barrel?  It would seem that it would be a whole lot cheaper and easier than boring, reaming and cut rifling a barrel a factory barrel to a new caliber.  Plus you could have a match grade barrel if you wanted one, or you could use any other barrel you could come up with.  Looking at a handi rifle it is clear that it does not take an aerospace machinest to build one or a nuclear certified welder to weld on one.  .  Larry

Don;t know how well it would work , After you cut the threads off and re-chamber the barrel you will have as much in it as if you started with a H&R barrel .

You still have to make sure that you have the same spaceing at the breach and the Dia. of the barrel will fit the frame . Just my .02 worth

Larry.
How would you cut off the lug? Flame cutting would be difficult and would perhaps leave a mess. You could cut it with a band saw and then mill it to shape wit a v-groove for a weld,

The barrel would need a 4.5" straight section 1.11" diameter to suit the frame. So an ordinary barrel would not work. A 1.20" barrel blank is what you need.

At this point you are way past the cost of a rebore. By the way the man that rebores my barrel produces match grade quality and so does Wayne in Origon.

Drilling and threading the stub will also cost more than a rebore if you buy a good barrel.

If you do a search you will find a lot of posts dealing with this subject. If you have access to a machine shop and do all the work youself you still would have to buy a $250 barel blank and rent a reamer.

I recall tere is some one that sells barrel lugs? To make custom barrel for a Handi is expensive and I am not quite sure wether it is worth it on a Handi frame. I know I wont buy another Handi .Twice is enough.

Really if I cant buy a Handi that wont shoot with a bit of tweaking then I dont want to buy anymore.  Out of three barrels I bought non would shoot worth a hoot.
