New fiber optic sights good or bad????????

Hey there shooters

How about some thoughts on those sights showing up on so many new firearms these days.

To my way of thinking, it is a fad whos time has yet to come.

I had them on a TC "classic" which in itself was a very bad trip and another story altogether.

However, I didn't like them as they seems to have a  florescence/glo etc., and just didn't give a good clear/sharp sight picture.  Didn't worry about them at that point, as the sights quickly came off, the holes were plugged and on went a scope.

Anyway, am in the process of buying a NIB Ruger Mark II Slabside but along the way thought about the Mark III Hunter. Like the barrel, but those fiber optic sights kept me from thinking very long in that direction.

Those sights would also be a negative point on any other firearm I looked at unless they could quickly be done away with in favor of iron sights or scope.

My eyes are 50 and I love fiber optic sights. In fact, I bot fiber optic inserts from an archery store and my CNC machine buddy drills and mills the front sights of my choosen firearms for optic inserts.

I love these things. Sight acquistion is much eaiser and my 1911 speed shooting is much better.

My Winchester 1300 has a fiber optic sight on it, but I haven't shot it yet so don't know how well it will work. Probably pretty well, as I don't have only one sight to worry about.

I know I blacked the orange insert sight on a revolver, since it seemed to throw a haze which made orientation difficult on targets. Much better luck with the blacked sight.

Anyway, good luck with the new Ruger and the scope.

Howdy Folks,
My eyes are 64 and I thought my days of bouncing cans at 25 yards were over but I bought a Browning Buckmark with the fiber optic insert in the front sight and again the cans dance. The insert brought back the fun of shooting for me.
I put a set on a Winchester 1300 and now at 75 yards with slugs it shoots like a rifle. I use the cylinder bore choke in it with the slugs.

I took up a bow at fiftyone, my buddy suggested them and he was right---- when I bought my S&W 500, first thing I did was install the green sight.  Any ight at all, they light up like a Christmas tree.  I don't care for them on small handguns, I prefer a SDM gold bead -- that being said, while not everything, many times things have their place. What works for me, may not be so good for you---  be that as it may, I am willing to bet they will be around for some time to come.

60 here and I have them on numerous hand guns and a few
rifles - they make the difference now!

I have them on my TC Classic and a Browning Buck Mark.
I really like them on the pistol but would rather have regular "iron" sights or a peep on the rifle. But that's just my opinion, and you know what opinions are like  :wink:

I like the fiber optic sights, myself. To me, they don't seem to be as good for precision work, but they're great for picking up the sights quick for hunting or plinking and plenty accurate enough. I've been putting them on my black powder rifles lately.

I recently purchased a "Ruger Mark III hunter with the fiber optic sights.   This gun was specifically purchased to participate in rimfire steel plate matches.  In this game, you shoot groups of steel targets against the clock.  For this type of shooting, the fiber optic front sight with the v notch rear are a definite advantage over the typical patridge type sights for rapid sight alignment and placement on the target.   However, for bullseye target shooting, it is dificult to get a precise sight picture with the Mark III Hunter setup.  So depending upon your intended use is, the fiber optic sights may or may not be good.

I like the fiber optic sites in low light, or high cover circumstances, when it is bright, with glare, they get kind of fuzzy, and annoying to tell the truh.  I would rather go with iron sights just for that reason.  Though they are helpful and do have their place.

I like the fiber optics for low light, or in situations that require fast target acquisition (hunting thick cover, self/home defense, etc,) but I prefer traditional irons for precise shooting.  I find that the 6'oclock hold and lining up the dots often produce two very different groups on paper, at least for me.
