Accuracy and recoil of 30.06 encore rifle
« on: January 14, 2006, 01:55:13 PM »
I am interested in getting a stainless 30.06 rifle barrel for my Encore, what kind of accuracy can I expect . I have just installed a limbsaver on the synthetic stock. Anybody out there with this set up? T/C offers both a 24" and 26" any advantage in this caliber.

You can expect very good accuracy out of your Encore. Mine shoots moa with most loads.

As Far as recoil, put it this way..I've shot 2 full boxes comfortably out of my 30-06 pistol.  I'm no chest thumper, I just think that they are very manageable.  The Stock design on the rifles are some of the best for mitigating recoil, at least for me.

PS I shoot the walnut stocks, the weight may be a factor in minimizing felt recoil in my guns.

If you handload, you will find that for better accuracy, you will seat the bullet closer to the lands than you will be with factory loads. Your oal will be greater than the factory loadings because the chamber length of the TC barrels are long and you don't have a magazine to limit the length of the cartridge. This finding is usual for nearly all handloads for nearly all TC barrels for which I handload. I suspect most hand loaders reach the same conclusion. pg

Hey guys,
I ordered a stainless Encore on Monday in 30-06 with a 26" barrel.  I am really, really looking forward to getting this rifle in my hands.  I am a handloader and I plan on dialing this rifle in.  I had a H&R synthetis handi rifle in 30-06 and the recoil wasn't bad, so I don't expect this rifle to be bad either.  Eventually I will probably get one of the katahan barrels and maybe a barrel in 338 if I can find one.  I already have my thumbhole stock ordered and in the mail.  Hopefully I'll get a chance to fire it this weekend and I'll let you all know how it handled.

My wife bought me a 24" sts 30/06 rifle barrel for Valentine's day last year.If I only could have one barrel this would be it!With factory 150gr
Federal loads it would group into 1MOA or right at it!The recoil is not that bad at all,I can tolerate a whole lot more but I just dont like getting knocked around(and if a 30/06 wont take care of any problems I encounter in my neck of the woods-THEY CAN HAVE THE GUN AND I'LL JUST RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I will say that when shooting from a bipod when the rifle recoils it has collapsed one or both of the legs on the bipod.I have my barrel getting shortened right now and I hope to pick it up this week
(its been at G.S. for 5-6 weeks  :( ).7.62x63

I would go with the 26 inch barrel.  In the Encore the "long" barrel will still give you a shorter gun than other .30/06s.  I use Varget in mine and get about 1 MOA with 168 gr. Nosler match bullets and 1.5 MOA with 165 gr. Hornady Interbonds.

Here's my gun.

I took my new stainless encore to the range tonight right after work.  It was a perfect day and I had the whole place to myself.  After I dialed in the scope I noticed something about this rifle........  It's just outstanding!  My 30-06 has the 26" barrel and I was under 1MOA at 100 yards with FACTORY ammo!!!!!  I was just shooting some Remington 180SP.  These rounds are very basic, cheap, and surely have a less impressive BC.  But while I was at the range I was impressed!  I can hardly wait to develop some handloads for this rifle.  I only put 22 rounds down range but they were great.  I was stopping to clean and scrub out my barrel and let it cool down between some shots.  I highly recommend this rifle to anyone considering getting one.
