Hello, Semi newbee,I just bought a Ultra Varmint Fluted 204
« on: January 14, 2006, 02:16:49 PM »
Hello everyone, I have been lurking here for a couple of weeks. I just ordered a new H&R in 204 Ruger. What a vast and wonderful site you all have. Who would have thought this much talk and info would come from a $200 rifle. I cant wait to work up some loads for it. It is on order from Dicks. I could not believe the price of $159.95. The 22/250 and 25/06 were $269.00. Walmart was more than that. I have yote out back that are in serious trouble. The competition with my friends shooting poker chips should be more competetive know also. I have already planned to do the neccesary things I have read about here to improve it. Next will be a 450 Marlin, 308win barrels for it.

P.S.
I am glad to see everyone back That would have been alot of lost knowledge for everyone.

Sincerely,

AL

Welcome to the crazy world of H&R's . If you are looking at the 450 Marlin as a big bore hunting rifle , May i nudge you at the 45/70 .

This being said , I have one of the 450;s . Yes it can be fun to shoot but it does not shoot as well as i want it to . Some can get them to shoot very well / not mine .

Don;t get me wrong i will keep it and one day it will shoot . When you look at the numbers the 45-70 is just a better round .

Mitchell,
Dicks can be found attwo of the Malls (that I know of) here in Maine, Bangor and Portland. I really do think it is a missprint for $159.95 but they sold it to me. The other places I looked had prices listed the same no matter what caliber they were.

Stimpy,
I chose the 450Marlin because I owned an 1895m(450) and loved the round. I ran maxed loads as well as cast target loads. I still have brass and bullets for it so It is the logical choice for me. I hope to get drawn for a moose permit. The permits are getting a little easier to get now. A 420 grn hard cast at about 2000fps ought to do the trick on a nice bull.

Thanks for the welcome.
The reason I havent posted sooner is because 99% of the info needed has already been asked and easy to locate. I mostly need to know about the balistics of the 204. Like the tragectory and effective range. If I dont like it I can always sell of the barrel and get a 22/250 or 25/06. I was leaning towards the 25/06 to use on deer but the price for the 204 kind of grabbed me.

Ill be around awhile I suspect.

Gutshot,

Welcome aboard. I don't mean to gutshoot you here but you might want to make sure you are getting what you think you are getting. I have never seen a Ultra Varmint Fluted rifle go for that price ($159.95). The Handi Rifle is that price and I would bet that is what they ordered for you. The Ultra Varmint Fluted rifles around here are more than the Ultra Varmint and Ultra Hunters with the laminated stocks ($250-$300).

If Dick's is selling them for that I will be buying one of each tomorrow.

Just trying to give you some information on these rifles. The bold part is the item #. Click on the links and scroll down to the rifles. I hope I didn't pop your bubble, but that price is too good to be true. If it is their price, I'm going to be buying a few.

This is the .204 Ultra Varmint Fluted info:
H&R SB2-F20 ULTRA VARMINT 204 24FL SYN

IMHO, $159.95 is still a great price even if it is a handi.  One of my sons' friends came up last week with a new handi in 204 that he got at the local Bi-mart for $199.  With a low-$$ bushnell scope, rings and 2 boxes of ammo and 8% sales tax it was 299 OTD and he's a happy camper.

We got it dialed in at 50 with only 6 rounds the last 3 into a cloverleaf.

That's one LOUD rifle.

I  double checked the book myself twice to make sure of it. I think it is a misprint. But the salesman said he would order it tomorrow.I paid for it so they should make good even if it is there mistake. The 22/250 and 25/06 were 100 or so dollars more. I cant figure it out, but I am not complaining.

Thanks for that info Quick.

Yes, It was the Bangor Store.

Cheatermk3 and MSP have made good points, I paid $190 plus tax for my .204 Handi in Oct '04 just before the last price increase. Worse case scenario, they ordered you a 22mag UltraVarmint, that's about what they sell for. Do you know what model number they ordered for ya, Al?? The fluted Ultra is SB2-F20 and the Handi is SB2-204.

The .243 fluted Ultra is new for 2006, I think it is available right now, both as a complete rifle and as an accessory barrel, you'd need to check with em for sure, though.

I asked them if they had the 2006 catalog and they said they would not have it untill march or so. I had 25/06 on the brain cause its what I was looking at before in another handi.

I agree on the $159 price both being GREAT and being for a Handi rifle- not an Ultra.

A gunsmith buddy of mine was looking up the latest prices of these guns for me in his New 2006 Jerry's Sports dealer catalog. The Handis are ALL $180 ++ now -dealer cost.

The Ultra are $225 and up.Again that is dealer cost with $10-$15 per gun just to get it to  him tacked on to that.

That means once old inventories get sold, in the real world ,most New Handi rifles simply will be costing  $200 ++ even in the big discount stores..

For $159, you should buy TWO..

when you go to pick up your gun, see if you can get a few more of them at the same price, then sell them to some of us

i get the first one, it was my idea.  i'll gladly pay that price, plus cover you cost to ship it out

good luck

I just might pick up at least one more, probably two for the stocks and recievers for myself and sell/trade the barrells off. Choate sells the stock sets for about $60 I think. But I will have to find out if they will still honor that price. Ill see about getting one or two extra. So thats about four more   .

i believe i heard somewhere that you could only buy (register) two guns to yourself at a time or else you have to have a FFL. i have no proof just something i heard , you might want to check into it before you order 4 of them (at that price i would buy all they can get and part them out and make a bundle)

OK guys, yesterday I called 3 Dicks, none had the .204 Varmit Fluted in stock but I was quoted the price of $159.95 for the gun in .204 (NEFSB2-F20) at all 3 stores but was told the .223 (my first choice) was $269 as well as $269 for the other caliber it was offered in (either 22-250 or .243). I called the nearest Dicks and tried to order 2, no luck I had to wait until the manager came in today so he could see if it could be ordered (if it was in stock at their "unknown" supplier) They were going to call me with the info. I called today and was told the gun was $219.95 and that they did not tell me it was $159.95 (which they did). I called another Dicks and was told the gun did not appear in their special order book, however the other 3 stortes were able to find it... :?

Anyway, at this 4th Dicks store the salesman said since he did not have it in his book he had no idea how much it was, also they had no single shot H&R's in the store and showed no fluted barrels in the book at all.... :?  :?

I asked if I could try to order one, he said I would have to come to the store and order it. They would then try to check with their (unknown) supplier which would take about 2 or 3 days, if the supplier had it I would have to come to the store and place the actual order and put down 50%. They would then order it, when it came in I would have to return to the store to complete the purchase, 3 round trips to purchase the gun!!.... :?  :?

This makes WalMart look easy, they are only round 2 trips (if the guy working that day has any idea at all about how to do his job!!!!....<><.... :o

so goes the saga of my ALMOST Fluted .204. Gutshot I wish you better luck than I. The Bangor and Portland stores did quote $159.95 so I hope you prevail, after all, they quoted you the price and you ordered the gun and put money down on it, they should sell you the gun for that price, good luck and let us know how you make out.....
