Savage Mod 12 in 308 question?
« on: January 14, 2006, 03:58:15 PM »
I have a .223 in Mod 12 and it shoots dime size groups at 185 yards. I am considering the Mod 12 in 308 and am wondering if the good grouping is also good in the 308?
Waiting to hear from you 308 owners before I buy..

Savage Mod 12 in 308 question?

I just picked up a Stevens 200 model in 308. Now, I know the bolt is engraved with "Stevens" and not "Savage", but I gotta tell ya, the action and barrel look like it came off the same assembly line as the Savage to me.

Anyway, I havn't shot the gun yet as I have to pick up a scope and I am waiting for my Limbsaver recoil pad to get here. I shoud be shooting this gun by the weekend and I'll give you a report by then.

The barrel is free floating so I am expecting good results from it.

Dave.

I own a Sevens 308 and the recoil is not bad. I have been shooting a Savage model 10 FP bull barrel in 308 and its a little better but I can shoot dime size groups with both. ttry the 165 or 168 ballistic tip round you will be happy with the weapon. Both of mine I have changed stocks on and it seems to reduce the recoil a little. My model 10 has a heavy varmit stock and my Stevens has a boyds laminate very happy with both.

 Hope it helps. Steve

Savage Mod 12 in 308 question?

Well, I finally finished mounting my Nikon 4.5 to 14 Buckmaster scope and my Limbsaver recoil pad to the Stevens 308 cal. If you do anything, put a Limbsaver (#10111) recoil pad on. These are well worth the $28.

I was shooting two loads. A Serra 150gr boattail over 43gr of Varget and a Hornady 110 grain over 36.2gr of IMR 4198.

It took about 10 shots or so to get the scope zeroed in and I let the barrel cool down after 4 or 5 shots. The Varget loads grouped about 1.125" at 100 yards. The IMR\Hornady loads would just cloverleaf!!!

What a gun. Savage done real good on these units. They may not be the prettiest, but they sure can shoot.

I need to try some other bullet weights and powder loads to see if I can get a 150 or 165 gr to cloverleaf. But for hogs and coyotes, the Hornady's will do just fine.

And for that ugly grey stock...I can sit on it, spill stuff on it, spit chew on it..it won't hurt it or make it any ugly-er.

What a great gun.

Dave.
