thinking about getting a smith 686 and was wandering what the dash means when one says they have a 686-3 or a 686-4 or a 686-5. new to smith revolvers. any info would great, thanks in advance.

Each engineering change they thought was important enough would up the dash number by 1. It would start out as 686 then go to 686-1 on the first change and so on.
