load favorites for a .41

I was wondering if anyone here loads jacketed bullets in the .41 magnum revolver.  I just ordered one, and will research some loads for 210 grain bullets.  I like the xtp's, but if anyone has any other favorites, I would like to hear them.

:? Depends on what you want to use them for really. One load I like with the XTP is 18-18.5gr. W296. You'll want to work up to this of course. I've also used 9-10gr. of Unique with good results. Both loads are excellent on deer-sized game. Excellent choice of calibers by the way. :grin: RKBA!

Definately give 2400 a try.  My most accurate load for the 220 grain lead bullet is 18 grains of 2400.  Don't take this as gospel for the jacketed bullets, though.  Try working up a load with 2400, and you'll find a good combination there somewhere.

Anybody ever notice that 2400 smoke smells like burgers on the grill?

Favorites---- 210 JHP over 21 grs H110, 270 GC over 16 grs IMR 4227 and a 215 LSWC over 6 grs of 231. These are my general purpose everyday loads, but work great...........

Thanks for all the input.  I also called Hornady, and got this:
Fed. #150 primers, 19-22.5 grains of Li'l Gun.  I have used this powder for my .357 and .480 and was pleased with it.

I have had good results with 800x and 210 xtps charge was 12 gr. you may can go higher
also 14 gr of 800x works great with remingtons 200 jhp bullet that is for sale- very very accurate in my guns- this is a hot load The resaon for 800x is that it reduces the blast and is econmical with powder charges --it is a bit dirty though-  
Hornday's H110/ 298 loads are also very good
I tend use cast mostly  but even here 800x works well -

You don't say which revolver.  I've been loading and shooting the .41 Mag since the mid '70s.  Have used the .41 in S&W M57s, M58s and a converted M28.  Most loads you see are excellent for use in the S&Ws.  Most of the loads mentioned are great in them.

However if you have a Ruger things look a little better.  In .41 I currently only have a Ruger BH Bisley and use 23 gr of H110 with the 210 gr XTP.  It runs 1450 fps and is not only extremely accurate and flat shooting but quite deadly on critters and game.

Actually, it is one of those 657's, with a 3" bbl.  Magnaported.  This is going to be my packin gun when I am in the woods, hiking, scouting, and hunting.

I have been rethinking my choice of powder, after all, I don't want a slower burning powder in a 3" bbl.  DUH!!!  What is a good choice for a faster burning powder?  I am also thinking of trying out the 170 grain Sierra JHP, since this is not actually going to be a hunting gun.

I have used Unique with the 170s in a Smith M58 some years ago.  Don't have the load here at work but it was a pretty good one as I remember, hard to go wrong with Unique for this application.

Might look at Hodgdon's newer powders, Titegroup (9.2 gr max), Universal (10.3 gr Max)and Longshot (12.5 gr max) also.  I have not used them in the .41 but the data in Hodgdon'd manual shows they may work well for your intended use also.  Velocities are in the 1470 to 1646 fps range with Hodgdon's 10" test barrel so velocities should still be respectable from your 3" revolver. Let us know if you try them and the results.

I've got a 41BH with a 6 1/2" barrel. I know that you said that you want to load jacketed bullets. For about $7 a hundred I load Carrol 215gr swc. they're about $23 for 500 at my local shop. With that I load 6 gr. unique. Low recoil  and quit accurate. If you just plain like to shoot you might want to think about something like this.  After all with a new gun. They do take some getting used to. Youwant to be ready.

You got me thinking about that.  I was always afraid of 'leading' up a bbl with lead bullets, but if I keep the velocity down it won't matter, right?  I have some lead swc that I will be trying out in my 686.  If I like them, Maybe I will get me some lead bullets for my 657.  Thanks, I guess I'm not as stubborn and closed minded as I thought I was.

Of course try to find a minimally leading load but I have found the Lewis Lead remover very effective  and quick - no chemicals.  Have fun.

I bet that 6 gr Unique won't lead much at all with well lubed bullets.

I get no lead at all with the 6 gr of unique and the carroll bullet. Also I load the same bullet with 12 gr of blue dot @1200fps and no lead.
