Customizing the Winchester 88

I am just looking for anyone who has done any work on the 88.                                                                                                             First I was wondering if it would be possible to redo the front action screw. I would like to drill and tap the action metal just in front of the magazine at an angle. So I can freefloat the barrel.
                                                                                                      Secondly, when rechambering an 88 from a 308 based case to one based on a 284 case,what must i do. i knoe i must have the 284 mag and the barrel work,but would there be anything else to do.

Lastly, does anyone know of any good gunsmiths who have extensive knowledge of this rifle.  Particularlly in the area of acurizing and trigger work.

A magazine switch should fix most of the problems.. Moving the barrel screw to another location should also be doable. Perhaps an angled lug mounted on the barrel re-enforce using a sweated on block or a band? this would allow most of the barrel to float and still tie the first few inches of the barrel to the stock.  This is mostly fairly straight forward stuff, the trigger on the other hand is a booger... It's definitely a difficult one to tune. There was a gunwriter who wrote an article about customizing an 88. He extolled the virtues of the smith who did the work but the name is gone. Lost in the morass that was my memory. Perhaps someone else read the article and remembers more about it.
