safety problem?
« on: January 17, 2006, 09:24:09 AM »
I'm new and have a question.  My dad gave me an old 69A that's probably pushing a million rounds through it, bought new 40+ years ago and dad shot A LOT.  Recently the safety seems to be malfunctioning.  If I cock the bolt and put the safety on and squeeze the trigger than release the safety the gun will fire.  I've also noticed that my safety seems to move farther back than it used to, like there's a third position.  I like the rifle, know its valuable, but hate to have something that isn't safe to shoot.  Any ideas on what's wrong or how to fix it, or am I lookin at a problem for the local gunsmith.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

thanks for the reply.  Not really a big deal because I noticed it while cleaning it, unloaded, and haven't had it loaded or shot it since.  Just wanted to see if there was an easy DIY fix, but guess I'll take it to the local smith.

I just found your thread..I wish you'd have posted on the gunsmithing thread.. The problem with your 69 is likely a screw loose in the trigger mechanism. On the blow up at the link shown below it is listed as#12(safety lock screw). they work loose and allow the safety to be overridden. Simply tighten the screw and your problem will go away.. This was my first lesson in gunsmithing from an old and dear freind. Long passed he fixed a rifle I'd just bought and convinced me to learn more about guns.. Good luck!!
