What power scope for Contender/Encore??????
« on: March 14, 2003, 01:50:59 PM »
As some of you may know, I am looking for a starter Contender or Encore(see post in Handgun Hunting).

I've got a 2X Swift handgun scope.  Would that be enough scope to start with on either a 30/30 or 7-30 Contender or on a .308 Encore??

I know down the road a good 2-7 or so variable will come into play, but want to start slow and work my way up the TC obsession..

So what do you think??? Will I be ok with the 2X??  What ranges will I be limited to with this power of scope??

Bare with me,  I'm just starting this road to TC hell..

Thanks,
Steve

that scope will work just fine on any of those guns. no problem whatsoever. in time you can add a variable power scope if you want. i think the only hinderence you would have would be shooting for precision groups at 100 yards. 2x will work great for deer hunting purposes. you may be limited on long range varmints.
 just take your time and try to remain calm. this disease can really get a hold on you. only spend what you can afford. it'll make the pleasure last longer too. :)

Steve,

For those chamberings you mention, it really just depends upon the size of the target you are going to shoot.

Larger animals need less magnification than the smaller ones at similar distances.

I run 2x fixed on 30/30 and above, and 2x7 variables on the 22's.

Also got the bases and rings all standardized on all the barrels, so I can switch them around without changing the rings.

I just put 2x's on a 30-30 and a 375 Win tonight.  So in my opinion, that is plenty.

So far that sounds like one expense already covered.

Now I've just got to find a good deal on a Contender or Encore.

Thanks,

Steve

I don't do as much pistol shooting as I'd like to but...

I have several 2x leupold pistol scopes and love them.  I went out and bought a 4x leupold for an Encore pistol.  Turns out the view through the scope is so narrow I can pretty much only shoot it off sandbags.

I'd recommend trying a 4x scope before you actually buy it.  If nothing else, go to a local range and ask to look through one.  See if you an hold the gun steady enough (with and without a rest) to clearly see through the scope.  If so, then go for it!

480,  Not only is it OK, I'd reccomend it.  For those who have not used a long eye relief pistol scope, it is not easy to get used to and 2X is the easiest by far(except 1X) to star with.  I,ve seen several people buy a nice pistol or revolver, put an exspensive scope on it and immediately be disgusted with it.  On a few occasions I was even close at hand to help them out.  Look Honey, I really got a deal on THIS one...

I have been using a Burris 2x which came with my conender.
A 4x Burris came with the second contender I got.  I seemed
to do a great deal better with the 4 x.  Had great vision,
eye relief was still ok.  My confidence level in shooting seemed
directly tied to my vision...I found, hence I even use a
scope turkey hunting.  But I have found, for me, a 2x just
doesn't quite do it.   The 4x seems to be middle of the road
for shooting from 30 yards on out.....
The couple that hunts together....makes for
a darned wonderful marriage !!!
