Low Wall Action
« on: January 18, 2006, 01:20:31 PM »
Hello List: Where would be the best place on the web to begin my search for
a rim fire Low Wall action. I would like to build a 22 rf target gun from scratch.
Thank you in advance for any advice......jim

That's a tough one.   Probably the cheapest approach would be to buy a used NEF/Stevens Handi Rifle and build up on that.  Alternatively, you could buy an existing, newer Browning/Winchester LoWall in .22, but most I've seen are the "Commemorative" versions and pretty darned expensive.  The sweetest thing would to find either an original Winchester LoWall (not cheap, either, but they're out there ... try GunsAmerica); or, best yet, find a Falling Block Works action.  Any way, sounds like a nice project (sure you don't want to go .17 HMR?)

(B-K: Sorry it took so long for a further response; I've been trying to post this for days).
Getting back to your original question … “Where on the web?”
First, a question: When you say you’re planning to "build" a .22, do you mean you build it, as in do-it-yourself, or do you mean have it built?  There are a few semi-custom builders who do Low Walls (I think); and it’s possible you may be able to get a bare action from them.  Look at Meacham (www.meachamrifles.com), and Ballard (www.ballardrifles.com).  Their completed rifles are beauties, but big-bucks.
As I suggested before, look on www.GunsAmerica.com; use their “search” function, with “Lo Wall” (or “Low Wall”) as your “Key Words”.  And, if you’re possibly interested in using a Stevens action as a starter, look for those too (there’s lots of them and they’re relatively cheap).
Try posting your question under the “Single Shot Rifles” forum, elsewhere here on Greybeard’s.  There’s a lot of knowledgeable contributors: they may be able to direct you.  Also, there are some serious collectors (like Marlinman, the forum Moderator), and one of them may actually have what you’re looking for.
If you’re in for the long haul (i.e., not in a hurry), you might join the American Single Shot Rifle Association (www.ASSRA.com) and develop contacts there or use their classified ads.
Hope this helps more.
