Any experiences or opinions on them? Just asking because I took a doe this year with the 80 grain Remington PSP and though it did not give the much worshipped exit hole it performed well.

The 87 Hornady has been a popular deer bullet for years, as has the Speer 90 HotCore. Still, I prefer a heavier or premium bullet like the Nosler Partition or X-bullet in these small calibers.

That 80-grain Remington bullet is a varmint bullet, not a game bullet. No wonder its performance was questionable on game.

I've killed many with the 85 grain sierra boat tail hollow point.....most never took another step.......

I've shot a few deer with 95gr nosler ballistic tips and they performed quite well. One drill through a 1" sapling before taking out the front shoulder and lungs on one deer

There are varmint bullets and then there are really soft varmint bullets. The 80 grain PSP is not a particularly soft bullet like say the varmint weight Ballistic tips. I said I didn't get an exit hole not that the performance was questionable. The bullet penetrated 16 inches of deer taking out a 2 inch circle of ribs and at least 5 inches of spine at an angle before ending up under the hide ias a chunk of around 40 grains. Instant drop. Impact velocity must have been around 3000 fps. I may use this bullet to fill both my doe tags next season to get a better idea of it's abilities, I don't think what is taken for granted on the forums as gospel and anyway there are some pretty big varmints out there.

I would have to second the 87 Hornady. It has worked well in my 243.

My favorite gunshop has some 87 grain Hornady boatailed hollow points at a good price but I figure you guys are talking about the flat based soft point. I think there are a lot of 5MM bullets that will do the neck/behind the shoulder hits just fine. Anyone found better powders than H414 or any of the 4350's to use for this bullet weight range?

My most accurate load is the 85 grain sierra BTHP in front of what is now listed as over max load of IMR4831.......haven't tried it on the Hornady.....

I used to shoot an over max load of IMR 4831 under 100 grain bullets. I got the feeling that you couldn't get too much of it in the case to cause problems. I have some H4831 that I save for my 270. To tell the truth seems like none of the 243's or 6MM's I have owned were finicky as to powders, just bullets.
