Fluted 243
« on: January 20, 2006, 12:08:11 PM »
Sold my 223 barrel on ebay.  Decided on a 243 24" fluted.  Anyone have one?

How well do they shoot?

What grain bullets are working the best?

The fluted barrel will not shoot any better or worse than other 243. In my opinion the SS bull barrel or the standard bull barrel is what I think will shoot best.

Fluting does nothing for accuracy a bull barrel is more acurate since it has more mass. Cooling is a mood point too. A bull barrel does not get as hot as fast.

The surface aria on a bull barrel is nearly as big as a fluted one. The more surface aria the faster the cooling.
The fluting I have seen on a Handi barrels is so shallow to be of any practicle thermo benefit.

The only thing  the fluted barrels have going for them is the extra 2" of barrel length, providing they shoot better.

The more mass the more heat absorption. So different calibers will react different to heat dissipation. Like 223 compared to a 243 or 25-06 or what have you. And of course different loads and bullets will make diffent heat.

One of the theries behind the fluted barrels is it makes them more rigid. Also a fluted barrel of a certian diameter will cool quicker than a barrel of the same diameter. Plus they look really cool. I have a 204 Fluted coming on order. I am curious about the barrel contour now.

I know the fluting is for cooling.  I am opting for the 24" fluted because a bull would be to heavy for my girlfirend to carrry around, and I like velocities out of longer barrels.  Not going to be a high volume varmit gun (thats why I have ar-15s with bull and super bull barrels) just a few shots per sitting.

And I think they look cool.

Not true. By removing mass, you removing rigidity.
The x-sectional area is what rigidity is all about.

Have you ever seen a fluted barrel on a BR rifle?

You can lighten a heavy barrel by fluting but it does not make it more accurate or more rigid. Yes they cool good if the flutes are deep enough. I have yet to find a real good excuse for a fluted barrel., and I can easy do it myself.

But if you think they look good, then by all means get one. Myself I like an octagon barrel.

There is a theory about them too by removing weight and still retain a better x-sectional area than a round barrel of equal x-section because of the two radii.
