ms, unlike you, I do want dead coyote load.  I just can't afford it.  :)   That stuff is absurd.

I'm in MI too.  Like you, I'm stuck with these idiotic regs now bc some bad apples were poaching deer.  Oh well, what-a-ya-gonna do...  BBs actually are pretty good, especially if you're in thick cover.  I almost prefer them over buckshot in such situations.  Just keep it under 50 yards.  As for which Federal product, my guess is it won't make much difference.  Choose the one that patterns best for you.

I'm going a different route here shortly.  Picked up a 77/22 mag for night calling.  I know, it isn't ideal.  I would much rather have my .204 along for the job.  Just have to pick your shots.  Put the first one in the shoulder and take out the running gear, then sneak one between the ribs.  The 40gr win JHP groups very well for me.

Good luck with them yotes. :D

I am going out for a sunrise hunt one of these mornings for coyotes, with a mouth-blown rabbit squealer. I want to use a rifle, but the only one I have handy right now is a .22----no go. I have 3" Winchester 12 ga #2 steel and a lot of property to cover. I am good with camo and think that I would be able to get them within 30 yards before lady 12 spoke.
Question is, am I just spinning my wheels; will they circle downwind and figure me out, or should I wait for the rifle I am getting at tax time? I don't want to educate them for  :D

If you'll use the #' BB load, you'll be fine on coyotes up to around 45-50 yards.

I use a 20 guage myself, but that's because I'm usually hunting foxes, and a 12 guage is way too much for greys at 20-30 yards. I've killed bobcats, and coyotes up to 40 yards using 20 guage 3" magnum #2 shot, and it works surprisingly well on them.

Hi i use lead copper platted BB's out of my SP 10ga. I talk to Bryon South and he field test the Dead Coyote Shot and the #4 buckshot. He said the DC only got you a few more yrds . It it wasnt worth buying for the few extra yards . Just use the #4 buckshot. I have fount some lead Copper Platted BB's in 3 inch but not in 3 1/2 yet. VM

I normally use either 4Buckshot or BBs in 3" mag 12 gauge for hunting coyotes.the bb makes less mess and you don't have to sew the holes normally.the BBs that seem to work the best I get from federal, they are the ones with less BBs in the shell as the velocity is higher in that load.I have Briley screw in chokes up to Xfull on my H&K super 90.and enjoy using the full choke for those filthy coyotes.
Both (the buckshot and BBs) work well, but when they are running and a shot is made the 4Buck wins hands down.it punchs their ticket fast.I have shot and killed coyotes at 85 yards with both.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

ms,

Western MI here. I have used BB for night hunting in the past but this year am using Dead Coyote. Its expensive but it hammers coyotes.
Daytime hunting I use #4 Buck or my 22-250.
