243 sighting in with different ammo
« on: January 21, 2006, 03:54:46 AM »
I need some help with this one. I have a 1 1/2 year old 243, regular barrel on the SB2 frame with about 200 rounds thru it. I have not done anything special to it except clean it as directed during break in because it seemed to be accurate. I took two deer with it this fall using Rem 105 gr. extended range ammo at 50 and 100 yards. I want to take my son coyote hunting now so I bought some Federal V-Shok 70 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. I also bought some Federal Power-Shok 100 gr. soft point for deer hunting later. I Started with the 100's and got a tight group but 5 inches high at 100 yards. Adjusting the scope for 1.5 high I got a tight group there. Switching to the 70's, I was 5 inches high again. Adjusting back to 1.5 I left it there and cleaned the gun. I then fired 3 fouling shots. The first one may have been a flyer or just too low but the second and third were one inch apart but just about off the paper and 8 inches low! I know different ammo behaves differently and lighter bullets are faster and drop less but this seems too extreme. What do you think is going on here?
