I used fiberglass and a piece of 3/4 OD PVC pipe to build up mine.
I 45'd the ends of the PVC to make it ramp up and down, then epoxy'd the pipe inplace. When it was secure, I used automotive fiberglass resin and fiberglass cloth cut to managable strips. I completely wrapped the stock with 1 piece, so it would be more secure. After the original wrap job dried (overnight), I sanded down the high points, then used more resin to fill in the low spots and give it a smooth finish. This took a few coats of resin since I had to keep the side I was working on level while it dried. When I was satisfied, I sanded it again and painted it.
A coat of Krylon Fusion flat black made it blend in rather well. (and Fusion is excellent at adhering to plastic or fiberglass)
I used a Kolpin elastic shell holder that will hold 9 308 rounds, and still streaches over the 1" raise in the comb.
When it was done, the storage was still accessible, and the scope lined up perfectly.
It took some work, and made a small mess on my workbench, but the
final product was well worth the effort.
I am going to try a neoprene pad sewn onto the top of the shell holder to soak up some of the recoil transfered to your cheek. This rifle is mainly used by my wife during hunting, and she doesn't like the "kick" she feels in her cheekbone. I don't find it bothersome, but I got to make the boss happy. Not every woman that would help you carry out a 200 pound 8-pointer, (old indian style - with the legs tied to a stick and resting on your shoulder) through 1/2 a mile of clear-cut.
I will try to post pics of the rifle, as it is now, on Monday.
Good luck,
