917VS Drilled & Tapped?
« on: January 22, 2006, 03:57:34 PM »
I have a 917VS and I've been reading that is suppose to be drilled and tapped to mount a scope base on, mine is not it only has the grooves to mount the rings on. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this on thier gun?

It's not a 917VS then, it's a 17VS, the pre 2004 model, unless Marlin skipped a step!!!

What is the difference between the 17VS and the 917VS?

Different trigger and safety, it's not drilled and tapped and doesn't come with bases, was made in 2003.

Accuracy

Is there any difference in accuracy? Is the trigger better or worse than the new ones?

the triggers were updated in the 917vs. The thin metal one you have is just fine however. The new T-900 system has a wide plastic trigger but i am not sure if it's a better one or not.

As Matt said, the trigger isn't better, just different, but the safety is much better. 17VS shooters are just as happy as the 917VS shooters. I've seen some say that the finish of the 17VS stainless is nicer, but not having seen em side by side, I don't know. Here's a thread from RFC on the 17V(S) trigger modification if you can't get a Rifle Basix trigger for it, dunno what your options are in Canada.

He isn't kidding about the drilling being crooked. Mine looked ok until I put the mount on and could see it in relation to the barrel.

Looked like a group of "special" kids had it in their school as a project.

I ended up using the dovetails and it shot great anyway.
