Hi,
I am new to the boards, have read numerous threads in the nef and t/c encore boards and still up in the air about which way to go.
I have won a Encore in a raffle and have yet to pick it up. I am interested in occasional varmint hunting and whitetail. I am looking for advice or oppinions on whether i should use the in store credit and get say 3 different caliber handi's or one encore??
Either way i go it will cost me little to no money as I won the rifle.
The cals. I am interested in are the .204, 7-08, and .280.
If i go the handi route i can have all of them at one shot or if i go the encore route it will take me alot longer to get the 3 desired calibers and several hundred more dollars.
thanks for the input
john

in this case you've got to look a gift horse in the mouth to tell them no Encore i want three Handi's!    and, you've got to buy scopes and rings for all 3....

i'd get the encore in 7mm-08 and learn to handload for it.   it's a great caliber.

then, when i saved up, i'd buy the Handi' in a .204 cal'

with handloads the 7mm-08 is a Great deer, caribou, black bear, and elk caliber............and something of a varmint caliber, too.   i'd make the most of the hobby by handloading is what i'm trying to say -- starting with that caliber.   then later on the .204 gives you an Excellent varmint caliber as well.   the 7mm-08 is varmint worthy....but strikes me as a big bullet for things like groundhogs and coyotes.

as a compromise:  the .22-250 is a SUPER varmint caliber, and can do duty as a deer caliber if you don't do Texas HeartShots!

just my opinion,

ss'

If its free I would take the Encore. Get it in 25-06 from varmits to elk with the right bullet and shot placement your good. If I went handi get your 1st choice of cal rig out wtih best scope you can get with money differents. Barrels aren't that expensive and can be added over time without having to miss that car note to pay for them. Unless you want that .204 for plinking and just a hole lot of shooting. The 25-06 can be loaded down for varmits and loaded up to cleanly take most north american animals. Would save a lot of scope money. But heck I got 3 handi barrels too! Tough choice. Goodluck! Maybe a double post site is wacko! Everytime I change posts its making me login again.

i would take the three handis ,but the 7-08 and 280 are to close to the same . how about 204 ,308 and44mag or 45-70 these would round your needs nicely.

thanks everyone for the input . after reading all the responses on this and the encore forum and also speaking with two reputable local dealers i have chose to go the route of the handi's I chose the 243 ultra and the 204.
Hopefully after setting them up with the appropriate scopes and shooting them i will be pleased. I am getting the two handis and will probably have enough to put scopes on them both with little out of pocket expense.
if all works well i will send the ultra in in the spring and have it fitted for either a 45/70 or a 280.
again thanks for the input and happy hunting :D
