Fix for Rem 700 ml hollow stock?

Every once and a while I bump something with my stock and am upset by the hollow THUNKKK it makes. Has anyone ever drilled into it and filled it with something that has a bit of weight to it and cures into a solid?

I've thought that a mixture of silicone and #6 lead shot would provide 1-1.5 pounds extra rearward weight to counter the forward weight balance on the 700 ml, greatly reduce the piano sounding board effect, and reduce felt recoil just a tad.

Anyone with pros or cons on doing this?

Good idea,

May want to findout how much area you have in the stock. May only need a few ounces to get the cg you want. Any expanding foam or silicone with sand spread evenly over the area would work. But it will be easer putting it in than getting it back out. Play around with it for a bit before you add.

I have not done this but I believe several months ago maybe even longer than, that people were talking about taking the recoil pad off inserting a tube to protect the stock bolt and then fill the area with foam insulation.  I have toyed with the thought but never followed up on it.

AAAhhhh Grasshopper..........the stock bolt.....never forget the stock bolt.

That's a good point I probably would not have thought of.  :o))

DUUUHHHHH! Guess what???   I bet mls have no stock bolt. Do you think??? Yeah! I do.

When I worked at Ace Gunshop in Freeport, MI we filled several of them with expanding foam insulation.  We rigged up a longer tube so that we could reach all the spots we wanted and then filled her up.  This started when we had a request to put a recoil reducer in one(don't ask) and we had to have a place to put it.  Worked real slick I thought.

I have several synthetic stocked weapons, not just my muzzleloader.  I fill the butt stock with the expanding foam insulation.  Just spray it in, do not fill it full cause this stuff expands like crazy.  Helps deaden that hollow sound. I have not tested it, and hope not to test it, but I am thinking if the gun got dropped overboard even if it did not float completely at least the butt end might stick up enough to find it in dark water.  $.02
