Why Not?

Is that Contender or Encore?  Looking at the data, even a 30-30 will do most anything the Herret will do.  But the 30-30 is readily available at ANY store in almost any place in the world, and brass is not a hassle.  The Herret claims that in (some cases) it will exceed the 30-30, but I am betting this will be with lighter bullets and faster powders.  I just took my 30-30 out today with some homemade cast 170's and had a blast with it.  I forgot how much power my 'first love' puts out.  P.J.  I havent got gas-checks yet, but if you want to try some of these 170's, let me know...
As far as rechambering goes...I know what you are going to do.  It will be the .309.
....make it count

hey pj, i'll just throw this out for you to think about. how about 30-30 ackley improved? i think it would be dandy. maybe just a little less horsepower than .309jdj though. i may get a 30-30ai at some point.

i know someone that has one for sale. it was rechambered from 30 herret by ssk. let me know if you need more info. 8)

I can't speak to a .300 Savage as I have never owned one.  My .309 JDJ is a rechambered .30 Herret barrel.  It will shoot with my friend's .309 made on a Shillen barrel.  The brass takes a bit of work to make, but I have some I have used for nearly ten years.  I made up my last batch two years ago when I took it to Africa.  This round has plenty of power for the antelope in the 400-600 pound range.

The .30 Herret is a more efficent round than the .30-30, which is the parent case by the way.  The round was developed back in the 70s as a means of improving performace in the Contenders.  I have a .357 Herret which can be a beast if loaded "properly".

The .30-30 is a fine round in the Contender.  I shoot silhouettes with my 10" and consistently shoot in the mid to high 30s (out of 40 possible) at the matches.  Another friend's first .309 barrel started out as a .30-30.  The accuracy was great, but it lacked the horsepower to nail down deer on the long shots.

So having said all this, I'd recommend you go with the .309 if you rechamber.

There are two reasons for me to rechamber
1.)I have heard that the herrett's have bent more frames than any chambering in the Contender...This maybe from hot rod loads not sure.

2.)My barrel likes bullets in the 150 and 180 class....but, the velocity is to low for me to use on any deer size game.

PJ:  What length barrel is your 30 Herrett ?  If its only a 10 or 12 inch, I would just trade it off   I had my 30 Her Super 14 bbl rechambered to 30 30 AI, because of availability of ammo, easy to reload & cost of rechambering.   If cost isn't really a factor for you I would go for the 309 JDJ.   From all I've read the 30 Her was more efficent than the 30-30 until T/C & others came out with the Super 14's & 16's.

It's a Super-14 and the cost factor is no big thing the barrel was free :)

PJ,  I have 30 Herret, 30-30WIN, 30-30AI, and 309JDJ.  All are good and have their place, But, the 309 is undisputed KING.  GO FOR IT!!!
GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt

just a side note: I recently got a 14" 30 Herret, I've had a 10" since they invented dirt. Thinking 14" would improve performance a good bit.  Like most my ideas...WRONG. admittedly, my loads were developed for 10", not 14" but there was almost no difference, and some were actually faster out of the 10". Also, I've fired thousands of rounds of 30 Herret and have two friends who have done same.  Never heard of a streched frame from its use.

PJ,
I have a 14" 300 sav barrel. As I have a Rem 81 in 300 sav it was a no brainer for me to go this way.  It is an accurate barrel and I shoot 130 gr jacketed bullets and cast bullets only. I don't load to max pressures either. Haven't had any problems with this barrel.   Orygun
