New rifle in the making
« on: March 16, 2003, 05:11:28 PM »
:-D  :D   Well,it looks like the show in Kalamazoo was a good one this year.  I did not spend a smuch as I would have liked but.............   At any rate I bought the makings for a new round ball rifle.  I god a Green Mountian bbl in .58 caliber.  Got a real nice walnut full stock to go with that 42 inch barrel.  Siler lock and a beautiful double set trigger to go with it .  Fergot to say that the rate of twist in the bbl is 1:70 so it might be a little fast for the round ball but should be good ok..The only way is to shoot it to find out .  Hopefully it is going to look like a Penn long rifle when it gets done in about two months.  I would like to shoot it in the next shoot comming up here in May.  Hmmmmm.   Might have to lite a fire under the maker a little bit.    Im thinking that this combination is going to make one hell of a rifle for white tail (maybe a little big),and should be good for just about anything else that I might want to hunt.  Going to be interesting to shoot with 150 of 2F and that big Rb.  Stay safe...King

I would love to hunt deer with a .58 round ball. I have used the .50 rb quite a bit. That .58 would be the cat's meow.
Aim small don't miss.

58 cal. question

Just out of curiosity, why would you shoot so much powder in it ?  I shoot 75 grains of Goex FF in my .58 & it cuts 3 holes touching at 50 yards & it is more than adequate to kill a deer.   :-)

King, Sounds like you got the makings for one fine smoke pole. You didn't mean whitetail as in deer though did ya? Ya meant whitetail as in the color of the south side of a Polar bear right? :-D  RR :D

King, I also went to K'zoo this past weekend.  What a show!  It should be mandatory for all kids from 4, to 90.  Although I'm not a builder, I did wage a successful campaign to enrich my collection.  I bought a beautiful rifle from Mike Meese.  It's a Berks County pattern, in .45 caliber, single set trigger.  He really does an outstanding job on his rifles.  I hope you got to see some of his rifles.

Strangest thing, though.  When I went in, I kept hearing this little voice that said, "Buy me.  Buy me."  I looked around, moved as the voice got louder, and "voila", the rifle I couldn't wait to hold and buy.  Like the old soldier saying, "Move to the sound of the deals (or was that guns?)!"

Can't wait now to get it out to the range, and run some powder and balls through it.
Best always and make smoke,

:-D  :-D     Birddog6.     My friend, you are perfectly correct on the power that that load gives you.  As you get used to me on this forum you will find out that I have a liking for horsepower, either at the muzzle,or at a distance....say...125 yards, which is plenty far for a smoke pole.  I always wanted a big .58 in a rifle of this configuration and I am interested in what the muzzle velocity is going to be.  Anything over 12oofps in that caliber is plenty for lotsa big critters and my S/S in 58 has that.  But.  I am always looking for that real small group that they will give in the single configuration.  It is a new toy to play with.  More power is not really needed that what you are shooting, and sometimes it can be a waste of powder,but..it is still fun.  Again you are 100 percent correct, but I do like my toys to expereiment with and see what they will do.  I have no use in atempting to get some of the things that an inline will do,but I like to shoot the RB alot.  What rifle ya shooting anyway?    Stay safe...king

:D Oendennis.  I looked at his rifles also.  Man it was hard to walk away from em.  I did it five times and I had the money in my wallet..sheeeesh that was hard.  I looked at a .50 that he had there and I fell in love with it,and his prices wre good and he is an excellant maker.  I got out of there and spent less that a grand, which for me,.......means I left early.  I cant wait to here how yer new one shoots, and you must keep me and the rest of us posted as to how it comes out.  I think that I ended up purchasing two (2) cases of BP also above what I spend on the other materials kept me from getting that S/S rifle just down fromhis booth.  Man..was that a beauty...and I dont already have one like it either.  What a show that one was.  If ya saw a big ugly guy with a tan leather jacket on,about 270 and 601 with a shaved head and goatee.  That was me.  Ya could not misplace that big grin I had on my face either.   Stay safe...king

King, you weren't the only one with a big smile.  There were just so many beautiful rifles and shotguns there.  I enjoyed handling Jack Garner's rifles, and was very impressed with the quality.  I really appreciate Mike's work, though.  I met him at last year's show, and got to see him again at the October show.  I brought in a Hatfield squirrel rifle, and ask him to fit a nose cap to it.  He did an outstanding job on it.  I went to his home to pick up the rifle, and he gave me a "private" showing.  That's when I decided I had to have one of his rifles.  He's also a "gear head".  He's currently working on a 1965 Comet Caliente convertible.

I'll keep you posted.  Take care and be safe.

King:  It was an old BB Mtn. Rifle  kit I built back in the 70's & had not shot it for years.  I shoot several dif calibers but I prefer the 40 cal & 54 cal. the most I guess.  I am building another .54 now & have it bout 3/4 way done. I have it all fitted & assembled & took it apart Sun & did all the carvings on it. Now I am stuck with what to carve on the patchbox lid so I guess I will mess with that til something hits me right, go thru some books & see if something inspires me.  I enjoy working on them as much as I do shooting them.  I was not picking at ya on your load, I just was wondering why it was so heavy as I would guess it would have alot of recoil on that charge. I wonder if it is burning all the powder with that much in there ?

:-D  :-D   Birddog6.  I know ya weer not picking on me at all.  I hope it will burn all the powder, cant see why it would not,at least under some type of compression.  Probably dont need that much power,but..I would love to hunt moose with one sometime.  I think that that charge on top of the rb should be a good combination.  I hunt with the .54,also.  I consider a .50 minimal for deer size game and like the larger rb.  Like to shoot the little .32 a lot also.  The more toys you have, the happier I am.  I love to experiment with them to see what the results are, thats why I have the long bbl on the .58.   stay safe....king

Burnin Powder

King:  If you have a Chrony you could set it up & check the velocity from 100 grains up in 10 grain incremants & see what the dif it. Then where it starts dropping off play with 5 grain increments & you chould come to a point where there is more powder than worth I guess you would say?  Have not done this but just thinking out loud.  No use expelling some of it out the barrel.  There are several guys on other boards that shoot  very large volumes in some sporting rifles, but they are shooting conical bullets in them.  Then main thing is that you enjoy it, as that is what it is all about.........

I like your taste King. I'm finishing almost the same rifle now. 58 Green mountain 42" straight barrel, Large Siler flintlock, a really nice piece of figured maple from Fort Hill Gunstocks. This one is wearing a Lyman 57 peep and a Lyman front globe sight.

Mine is a Lancaster style with a wide flatter butt on it but I chose that because it makes a better hunter to my thinking. I'm going to build a 36 cal sister to it later this summer. Good luck finishing by May.

:D   Yup....gots a chrony also.  I have more toys sometimes that I think I know what to do with.  That is the plan to see what she will do over the chrony and the accuracy department, and hopefully find where the diminishing returns come in with it.  Sounds like Peter Nap and I have the same train of thought on this type of critter.  That is why I thnik that it is sooooo much fun playing with these front stuffers and all.  Problem is that I also like the big boomers in the cartridge rifles also, like the .45-70/.45-120/and the little .50-140-700.  These things can be scary accurte in the right hands.  I had to order two cases of powder(1) of SWISS and (1) of Elephant to assist in my endevears in this venture.  I love a good cloverleave ya know.  I hope this banger is done by the time we have another muzzleloader shoot at the local gun club in the middle of May.  Keeps me busy.  I have been making a lot of holsters and belts lately for hard to fit handguns for guys, and have not really been able to   play..as much as I want to.  Now the weather is breaking and I can get out to burn some of the Holey Black as my friend marsh says.  Stay safe...King
