.357 Handi
« on: January 25, 2006, 10:24:16 AM »
Who out there has this caliber?  Do you like it?  Decent accuracy at 100yds?  I have fallen in love with my .223 but want something of a brush gun for deer and looking to keep light recoil so my wife can use it.  She just won't shoot a 30-30 even.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

I too am (still) on the look for a 357. Great little round for a Handi I think.
Have you ever considered a 44Mag Handi?
Hardly any recoil, and works great for a little brush gun. Though with a light set up does have a little barrel jump up, but it's not violent.

i'd recommend the 180 gr' JHP bullet in a .44 mag' for deer, using imr-4227 or H-4227 with Winchester large pistol primers to get a reasonable deer load that would not kick too hard.    either of those powders is relatively slow in a magnum handgun, and the lightweight projectile would help to limit the recoil as well.    the velocity will not be as great as with some other propellants; but you did say you wanted lighter recoil.

take care,

Aaron

I did consider the .44 mag, but I have a .357 revolver I love and just trying to limit the number of different shells I have to keep.  (Seems to be getting out of hand)

If you are interested, you can still get barrels in .357.  I just emailed last week to make sure.  I have been looking for a complete setup for some time now and no one seems to want to let them go.  I think that answers my question about how everyone likes them, but I would still like to hear from others who have them.

One of the first things I did after getting my .223 synthetic was to send it off for a .357 Mag barrel.  I think I have 9 barrels now, but the .357 is still my favorite.

I have chosen to keep mine standard and not ream it to Max.  My chamber and throat is long enough to use .360 DW brass and I can load to lengths greater than .357 Max lengths.

The .357 is the second from the top in this picture.

The loaded rounds pictured here from the left are .360 DW with 180 gr XTP (note the bullet is seated in the bottom cannelure), .360 DW w/250 gr Beartooth, .357 Mag w/250 gr Beartooth and .44 Mag.

All three rounds for the .357 barrel will shoot close to 1" at 100 yards.

I guess I don't see a lot of need for anything heavier than a 250 gr bullet for any critters in these parts.

The 357 mag seems to be a exclant cal. but the 357 max is even better.
