Super Blackhawk Upgrades
« on: January 25, 2006, 03:17:49 PM »
I posted a while ago on what type of rear sight(Millet or Bowen) I should get for the 4 5/8" stainless SBH that I just ordered. Most peple said I should go for the Bowen but didn't say why. I have a hard time justifing spending that much more if the are of equal value. Anyway I wanted to ask if single action Ruger .44s have the same undersized throat problems that thier .45s do. Will I need to have the throats reamed to achiece the best accuracy? Also, does a Belt Mt. base pin improve accurracy and lockup as much as they say. I also plan on a Wolff spring kit and some internal polishing to slick the gun up. Also does anyone have experiance with this gun? I am getting excited should be here next week.
Thanks all

Did you contact jcunclejoe like I told you?  He can help you with all of these questions, and take you out to shoot steel animals at the range.

Bowen rear sight has better adjustment and is repeatable.

Belt Mountain pin will help with lockup, if your pin or cylinder not fitting properly.  If you get lucky and get a gun with good fit, no need to waste the $$ on another pin.

I have probably 10 or more blackhawks and super blackhawks.  I have 0 Wolff springs.  Didn't need them.  I do know of some folks that changed their hammer springs to a lighter ones to reduce movement caused by falling hammer.  That was for their cowboy action guns.  If not shooting cowboy action, one handed, from horse, you probably wont need them either.

I have modified the factory trigger return spring.  That along with polishing mentioned below make for a very nice/crisp trigger.

You will need the internal polishing.  You are removing burrs and marks left from the machining process.  You can also remove metal to reduce trigger creep, but this is best left to an expert.

My super Blackhawk has the 10" barrel.  I went to the sight blade made for the 45 LC because it was a little taller.  My gun was shooting high and this taller blade let me aim 6 o'clock rather than having to guestimate amount to hold under to keep from shooting over everything.

Can't answer question about the cylinder throats until you get the gun.  There are several different opinions as to what you should have.  The type of bullets you shoot will have a bearing.  Best thing to do is confirm they are all the same.  If not the same, you will likely have different point of impact upon firing the different chambers.

Not saying what to do or what not to do.  Just giving you more info to think about.  No need to spend money on things you don't need or may not help when you could use it to start reloading or buying ammo to go out and shoot the gun.

Have fun and stay safe.

steve about covered it. The sight is just a better quality sight. The belt mountain pins sometimes help sometimes dont but never hurt and the nice thing is they lock with a screw and it prevents base pin jumping with heavy loads. the throats on most 44s are fine the way they come. Dont waste your money on spring kits. Have a proper action job done that not only address trigger pull but creap and smoothness. Creap is alot more detrimental to good shooting the trigger pull weight is.

Great advice guys. I will just shoot my gun stock and smooth it up some for a while and then see if I should go with a Belt Mt. pin and I will forget about the Wolff spring kit the last thing I want is light strikes because I shoot a variety of loads. I will also go for the Bowen rear sight.

Steve P, I have not yet made that contact yet, our lives are EXTREMLY tied up right now in selling our current house and building our new house among many other things and I just haven't had the time. I 'm sure you understand. I am lucky to get out to the gravel pit and shoot once every three weeks or so. I can't wait, at my new house I will be able to shoot coyotes out of my second story bedroom window whenever I want! We have also seen a few couger on the property.

Thanks again and God Bless

If the factory sight is not loose, putting a target sight on the gun will not help accuracy one bit. I put a Millet on one of my Rugers because the big, flat blade gives a cleaner sight picture and allows me to shoot, with the same accuracy, FASTER.
You can lighten the trigger by simply unhooking one side from the pin that it sets on, or take a pair of needle nosed pliers and put about a 20 degree upwards bend in both sides, about halfway between the pin and where it goes into the frame.
