.223 Handis and Win white box 45 gr HPs
« on: January 26, 2006, 07:56:48 AM »
It is widely reported here and elsewhere that .223 handis have a knack for shooting the el cheapo winchester stuff very well (usually).  So I'm assuming that changing to a 1 in 9 twist is going to wipe out this source of well-performing, cheap, pre-loaded ammo for those getting new rifles?   Can anyone with a newer 1 in 9 gun confirm or deny an accuracy change with this ammo?  Thanks.

Not a problem, with the search feature not working well, it's hard to find old topics.

I just got a 223 superlight, the gun wasn't at this shop a few weeks ago so I assume it's a new one

I was under the impression it's a 1/12 ?

V= 2005 production so it's most likely a 1:12" twist, the only 1:9" twist 223 barrels made in 2005 were the fluted Ultras unless they switched sooner than they told us.

faster twist rates on barrels generally do not attribute to a decline in accuracy for bullets.

personally I prefer faster twist brls, that way I can shoot any length bullet, short or long.

Another thing, I think all the 1-9 twist have an extractor, the 1-12's all have been ejectors. I may be wrong but I think that will be another way to tell.

Of course the only way to know for sure is get a tight fitting jag an make one revolution then measure the distance the rod traveled.

I just picked up 100 rounds of UMP Silver Bear 55 gr. fmj to try in my bull barrel 223.

Could not pass them up at $2.oo a box . I'll shoot them tomorow if nothing else i can use them for fowling rounds .

Even if they only shoot ok their still cheaper than the Win. White Box .

Now to print some targets for morning .
