Who makes a 44 sp in 3-4" barrel? I am looking for a lighter weight gun than a 44 mag, in DA.

Charter Arms has one. My dealer has had one in the case for several months and it looks nice, but I have heard the quality is spotty. No personal experience with them so this is just what I have heard. Also heard that Charter had been bought, but can't confirm that either. Not much help other than I know they are available.

Thanks for your reply. As soon as I signed off I thought of Charter Arms.
I was hopping a S&W would appear. They continue to make 38 sp so why not a 44 sp?

I have a 5 shot Rossi thats a great pistol. One of the smothest actions I ever found from a factory gun. But I looked at their web site and could not find anything but a 38/357 pistol offered.

S&W make a couple of 44 Spls. One is a lightweight Titanium job with a concealed hammer - looks like an oversized M38. I think they also continue to make the M24 in stainless steel in both 4 and 6" barrels. Not sure about that but information should be on their website. HTH. Mikey.

Check out Taurus. Owners can't stop bragging on it. Apparently better quality control than Charter had now.

:shock: The Charter Arms .44 Bulldog is really a fine gun. I have had mine for well over 20 years and never had a problem. For the intended purpose of up close self protection the gun it will work for you. Mine is a snubby, but shoots fairly well out to about 15 yards. The limiting factor is it only holds five rounds, that is why I put mine in the safe. Mostly I carry a Sig 220 .45, it offers a few more shots. :wink:

The Smith guns are nice looking guns, but if I had to carry something that large, I would go to a semi-auto in at least a .40. JMHO.

I like the old charters too. I've had two of them for a good while:

and they've served me well. One of them is still a regular companion. They are good shooters if you just don't try to feed them Keith level loads with any regularity at all. If you limiit your loads to emulate .45 ACP ballistics, they'll last and last and are reliable little revolvers.

That said, I've heard variable reports on the new ones of current production. I'd hope that the quality control issues are worked out, because I'd kinda like to get one of the new ones. The old Charters were, to my notion, good handguns. The new ones seem to be kinda iffy, but since I haven't actually fired one, I don't know for sure. If you buy one, give us a report on it. Inquiring minds want to know.

Taurus used to make a .44spl in 3", a model 431. I have one and will be searching for another. Its one fine revolver. Very accurate. e-mail me if you find a source.

Thanks for the reply's. I have 2 Taurus snubbies and they will work for a last resort gun. I have found that the wheel guns in that cal are the Ruger and S&W for a working gun. I should qualify that by saying "in my price range"

I have to put my vote in for the Charter's also. I have owned several and still often carry a 3" done up by Mag-na-port and have been very satisfied. I am a cast bullet lover but I have learned over the years that my Charter .44's really like the Gold Dot HP bullets and are very accurate with them! Maybe if Charter charged more money for their guns, they would get more respect. I have alway been very pleased with my Charters. 44 Man

I'm also looking for a 3-inch 44, the new Charters are 2.5 inches, but might do in a pinch. I had one of the Taurus 3-inchers, and loved it, but the sights were adjustable, and the rear sight blade was HUGE. Very hard to carry concealed without getting gouged. Sold it, but would love to find another with a fixed sight. Or one of the Smith 696's, sweet gun, but rarely seen for sale used, and Smith dropped them from production years ago. A buddy just found a used Charter with the 3-inch barrel, paid WAY too much for it, and he's not selling it. I guess I need to go haunt some pawnshops!

The Taurus 431s have fixed sights, or at least mine does.
