anybody use Hornady SST in .270 ? need a 130/150 bullet
« on: January 26, 2006, 12:01:57 PM »
Looking to make loads for the new gun.  Is a Winchester M70.  Will use H4831 powder.  Also have some Varget to try out the Hornady 110 V-Max that someone gave me.

In 130 or 150 grains what would you recommend?  Going to be shooting paper mainly.  Want a good hunting bullet that is accurate for paper shooting to 500 yards.  Sierra Gameking is my fallback bullet.  Hornady is cheaper with the SST's though.

Will bum some 130 gr Nosler BT's off the father-in-law just to check them out too, but won't buy a box yet.

They are a little pricey, but my vote goes to the 130 swift scirocco

I have used the Hornady 150 gr. SST's in my 270 WSM and so far have gotten good accuracy, 1.25" @100yds. It was my first load for the 270 WSM so I might even be able to shrink this down a bit. I have not gotten to use them on game, however they will go thru about 4" of a poppel tree and then about 2" into another poppel tree. I have used the ballistic tips in my 300 WSM and 7mm-08 and they seem to be very similar to the SST's. I think any of those, and the swift scirocco for that matter, will be a great bullet for you.

I recently worked up some .270 Winchester loads with IMR 4831 and 130 gr. Hornady SSTs that shot well.

Last deer shot with my .270 was with IMR 4381 at @2950 fps with 130 grain Hornady Interlocks at @75 yards uphill. DRT - no tracking. Shoots a 1" group on paper.

Best wishes,
Harold
