Goin' to a gun show....
« on: January 27, 2006, 11:20:09 AM »
I'll be heading to a rather large gun show Sunday, and two items that I'm looking for are a Finnish Mosin Nagant, and a 8mm Mauser. Anything in particular of these two models that I should look for? How about rough, ballpark prices that I should expect?

Get the Finnish M39 but the M91/30's, M24's and M27's are more rare i say bring plenty of cash because you never know what you will see.  On the 8mm mauser  yugo or german?  Look for the yugo 98k it will have the sane handguard as the german 98k which it is for a yugo price.

for the 8mm mauser-

I presume you will be looking for a Yugo 48 or 48a

look for smooth action workings, matching numbers if you can, finish of the blueing, grade of the wood, condition of the inside of the bore, bring a bore light, and if your serious bring a cleaning jag and some patches, so you can swab it a few times if there is lots of cosmoline or crud in it.

price should be around $150, any thing under a hundred be very suspect anything in good shape for 125 should be snapped up!

then get some Yugo 1950 8mm mauser ammo on stripper clips, 15 rnds to a box on 3 stripper clips, around $50 for 900 rnds. Good stuff and accurate! (I'm looking for more actually....) Corrosive, but still easy to clean.

Thanks for the replies.

As far as the Mauser, I assume that I want a Yugo. Am I correct in thinking that they are the most inexpensive and plentiful? How do they compare in quality to the other versions?

they are the most pleantiful and the condition ranges from battelfield pickup from the winning side, to unissued packed in cosmoline

Yugo's are the cheaper of the ones out there.

the one I have is mechanically sound and shoots very well!

quality of the other versions? the K98 is pretty much the only other version out there.

both are very good quality originally, but ....

it's like looking at old cars, you can find two that are the same year and make but one will be in good condition but not all original and the other will be in all original and not so good condition.... Know what I mean?

the short version of what to look for, Condition and matching numbers (if possible) you may find one in great condition but no matching numbers, don't be afraid of it if the price is reasonable.

EVOC ONE,
It's in Fredericksburg, Virginia. A friend that I work with says that it's one of the better ones that he's been to, at least around here.

Blammer,
Thanks for all of the info. As far as other versions, I was referring to Yugo, Turkish, German, etc. Sorry, I should have made that more clear. I'm fairly new to the 8mm Mausers, and there's almost too much information on them, it gets rather confusing to someone just starting out!

Thanks again for all of the help.

Last flyer from SOG (Jan 06) listed the following 8mms:

Turkish M38 - 59.95
K-98 straight bolt 139.95 (the regular rebuilt* K-98s with bent bolts are about $200)
M24/47 109.95
Yugo M48 99.95
Mauser M1903/38 89.95
Mauser 1922 129.95

Add about $10 for shipping to these prices.  The rest is dealer mark-up (Note I said 'mark-up' not 'profit' - they have expenses too).  I think the Yugo M48 is a great buy.  These are not 'exact' copies of the 98 Mauser, but close.  M48A is a somewhat cheaper version with some stamped parts and not as nice as the M48.  Last gun show I went to had M48s in good-very good condition for $99!

For a pure blaster you can't beat the Turkish M38.  Actually, for shooting, they're all great.

*almost all the sale/gunshow K-98s are WWll Russian capture/rebuilds.

was at the greensboro, NC gunshow today (sat) and found (by chance...)

a Yugo M48 (not the A) that was all matching numbers, stock (stock matching numbers are difficult to find) receiver, bolt, and floorplate (milled one not stamped) dripping in cosmoline with bayonet and other stuff for (and get this i still can't believe it) $89.00

yes eighty nine dollars! I didn't have the cash or the desire for another one but THAT would have been the one if I was in the market for one!

they are out there, this one looked really rough, but that was only because it was covered in cosmoline, blueing was GOOD everywhere....Look for the diamonds in the rough!
