New G2, need some help deciding
« on: January 27, 2006, 11:51:11 AM »
hello,

Im about to get a G2, I know im getting 3 barrels for it eventually.
I want the following....

.410 12" barrel

.30-30 for deer hunting, 14" barrel

For the 3rd I am looking for something like the .17hmr and Id like it to be a 10" barrel, so I can bring it with while yote hunting in case a fox comes in close (is it enuf gun for a fox). But dont need a .17 just some round easier on fur at close range than my .223.

Thanks,
Dave

Well theres your problem! You brought "NEED" into the equation. Don't you know thays just not tolerated. Seriously, why not a 22mag?

I dont NEED one...I just try to convince myself and the wife I do

I had thought about the .22mag, due to the heavier bullets, i am assuming this might have a bit more knockdown close up.

has anyone used a .17 rem in one? I dont want something spendy to plink with either, is 17 rem expensive?

I have the 45/410 12", 223 15, "45-70 ,and 357 15"max barrels. I think the 17 HMR would be ideal. I have a Ruger Single Six, a Handi rifle and a Savage in 17 HMR. Very accurate and flat shootin round. My favorite Thompson deer round is my 15" Encore 7mm-08!

The .17 is more than enough for a fox. Question is why not the Encore ?
At some point you may want to go BIG say a 460 or 500.

I have an Encore in .243, Im trading it in for the G2, I want the option of shooting the rimfire without all the hassles.
Also it just fits my hands better, and i more than likely wont get anything bigger, possibly the 45-70 down the road (have a rifle too).

Is there a good place to find a .17 or a .22mag in a 10" barrel? Ive seen some of the custom shops, but are there more affordable options?

Thanks alot for the replys

Dave

Dave,

I do not know how or why but every time I want a new barrel it will something T/C dose not have. But you get a nice surprise with that custom price tag.

The only rim fire I have is a E A Brown barrel in .17 hmr. It will flat shot. But the point with custom is A friend and I have 15" SSK 460 sw barrels. All I can say is Wow.  Both barrels would shout under 1" groups at 100yds with Hornaday and Corbon.

The custom shops charge for the time they spend and all of mine have shot great.

Good luck,
Steve

Hi all,

Just ordered it tonite, should get it sometime early next week, got the 14" 30-30, that should get me started now ill start looking for the 12" 410 and a 10" rimfire of some sort, most likely the hmr

Dumb question, am i going to need a new forestock if the new rimfire barrel is a bull barrel?

Thanks fellas for all the help.

Dave
