Crimp?
« on: January 27, 2006, 01:56:44 PM »
Is there a need to crimp the bullet in when reloading for a Handi? I am reloading for a 45/70 and so far have not used a crimp. But was wondering if there is an advantage or not.

I begin with 45-70 (light reload, subsonic ammo).
I apply a light crimp (Lee FCD) mostly because i flare the case to reload with cast bullet.
When reloading (always subsonic ammo) for middle or small caliber, the crimp help to achieve a good burning of the powder. In 45-70 the inertia of the big bullet seems to be enough for this objective.

Center shot try both ways and see if there is any difference in accuracy and then decide what you want to do. I used to load for my lever action and i use the lee factory crimp die  i no longer use the lever but i do load for the handi rifle and i still crimp i guess its realy not needed but a good crimp will stop the bullet from pushing down if you should drop it before loading.  And welcome abord Center shot . crimping 45 70

I like the Lyman taper crimp for .45 70 loads, but the Lee Factory Crimp Die is a good one.  Crimping in this caliber seems to improve uniformity of combustion with some powders when using bullets less than 400 grs.  And, if you use cast bullets, it's needed to remove the flare facilitating the seating of these.  In other rifle calibers (ie bottle neck) with jacketed bullets in Handi Rifles and other single shots, crimping is usuallly not necessary, the neck tension from resizing being plenty to hold the bullet in the case.

I use the Lyman "M" die for belling and the Lee Factory crimp die for all my 45-70 loads..I get much better shot to shot uniformity and accuracy..I've not had much luck without a crimp of some sort on it..but I'm using heavy loads for it ..not light loads...so this is probably why..
