Just found this forum, great stuff. I was wondering if anyone has had any trouble shooting remington 405gr from their 45/70? I had around 6 shells from a box that did not go bang. They didn't feel light, had good looking primer strikes, just no bang. I haven't had any trouble with any other ammo from this gun.

Humm...all I can say is-perhaps a bad batch?
I personally don't own a 45-70, well not yet :grin: , so I can't speak form experiance. But I don't recall anyone having problems with the Remys.

Welcome aboard!! I suspect remington has produced a few bad primers, I've had some rem 9½ primers fail on my handloads which just happen to be in my 45-70 loads. Never had any problems with the rem .405 factory loads, tho.

If I have to buy or trade for factory 45-70 ammo, Remington is my first choise. Have never found a problem like yours,...yet! Of course anything is possible. A lot can depend on how old and how the ammo was handled and stored. Moisture and oil contaminates can effect ammo over a period of time. The advice above is good, contact Remington. Good luck.

How long had it been since you fired the rifle with "other ammo" when you encountered the misfires?  What kind of indent did the firing pin make on those rounds?.  If you snapped them again, did any of them fire (this would be an indication of whether the primers were "dead" or just not struck hard enough.)?   I've seen guns that had been put up for a while that had accumulated "gunk" inside the action and did the same thing you describe, but after some good cleaning and oiling, never missed another lick.   As has been said, a "bad batch" is within the relms of possibilities but I've not seen this phenomina in any brand name manufacturers bullets such as Remington.   Trying some of the rounds in a different weapon might also be of interest.

I was having this problem (the last time) during a range session where I also shot federal and 300gr remington without a problem. The first time one of these didn't go off I was shooting on a windy 20deg. day so I figured it was just the cold gumming up my firing pin. After giving the gun a good bath with gum cutter the next time I tried these shells it was about 60deg. and sunny so the cold wasn't the problem. I did double, mabye even triple strikes on the ones that didn't go bang. I saved the last 2 non-firing shells from that box with the intension of pulling the bullets to see what is in them, just haven't got around to it yet. Primer strikes all look pretty good to me.

You just gotta pull em and see what's inside.  For one thing, do they have powder?  Did the primers fire and the powder fail to ignite or were the primers just dead.  The thought comes to mind of possible inactivation of the primers by some solvlent or penetrant such as WD 40 though I think the effect of the latter on primers has been overstated some.  

Pull 'em.  Now you've got me hooked.   :lol:

Had a problem with factory Remington .35 Whelen cartridges not going off with my Handi.  They shot fine through my Mauser.  Just that one box.

I haven't had much problem with Remington ammo of late..but I have had some primers that failed to go off..I suspect it was due to my mishandling them..but..as far as factory ammo..I always call them and let them know I had a problem and every time they ask for the ammo back to look at.I've always gotten another box or 2 from them for my trouble of sending them back to them.The last batch I did this with was with some Weatherby factory ammo..and it was replaced from the store I bought it and given to the factory rep....They do like to know if there is a problem and it has always paid off for me to call..

Does anyone have an e-mail address for remington ammo? All I could find on the website was a long distance phone number. I guess I should try to sive them a shout before I pull these bullets in case they want to look at them.

They have an online email system under Support, then Help Center and hit the "ask a question" tab. The direct link is too big and makes the page too hard to read, won't work as a hot link.

Did you follow thru with the trigger pull ?
Because of the transfer bar, these guns
are pretty particular as to holding the
trigger back until completion of the
hammer fall.
