, Hey Montanan where ya been?. I enjoyed reading your knowlegeable and informative posts here, keep on coming by will ya. I hope you don't mind but whenrver someone asks something about the big old calibers or long distance shooting, especially with black powder I always suggest they reach out to you. I consider you our resident expert in those areas....<><.... :grin:

Thanks Jon, that's a real pretty rifle with the engraving, but for the $180 extra, have they upgraded the rear sight??? Can't tell in the pic.

Been thinking about a BC. The question about whether the rear sight is upgraded - why? Is there something about the current sight that isn't good?

The WGRS is fine for a hunting sight and even limited target shooting, but it's incongruous with the style of the rifle. A more approapriate sight would be one like the Smith ladder sight or maybe an 1873 trap door sight or a vernier tang sight. If they replaced the plastic trigger guard and spacer with steel, or even better, brass, then they'd really have something nice to offer us.

Ah, I got ya. Yeah, I have had the same thoughts, but I am more interested in shooting it and I have always liked the functionality of the Williams sights. I agree with you - the style is incongruous for a "Classic", yet not necessarily for the price.

The original Frank Wesson rifle appears to have just a dovetail blade for a rear sight, so I think their keeping the sights simple is inline with the original purpose of the rifle, an inexpensive "Handi" rifle that anyone could afford.

Can you adjust the factory site to shoot at 1000 yards? Or rather is there enough adjustment to shoot that far. Ive really got a hankerin for a BC. :grin:

No, specially with the .584" tall front sight. Some of us had to replace it with the .404" tall front sight just to zero at 100yds, I was hitting 6" low at 50yds with the standard sight at the top of the ramp, but I think mine was an exception, lots of BC owners shoot the standard sight out to 200yd or so, dunno what the max would provide, but the FP target sight with the .404" front sight is good for over 500yds, and can be elevated considerably above than the standard sight.
