I JUST PICKED UP MY 243 ULTRA TODAY GOT IT HOME. AND WHEN I BROKE IT DOWN THE BARREL HAS A LOT OF SIDE PLAY IS THIS NORMAL? THIS IS THE SECOND ULTRA THAT IVE OWNED. THE 25/06 OR 270 HANDI NEVER SEEMED THIS LOOSE. MAN I FEEL SICK. SINCE THIS A NEW GUN NEVER FIRED NEVER ANYTHING SHOULD THE DEALER TAKE CARE OF THIS LIKE A REFUND OR EXCHANGE? OR WILL I HAVE TO SEND IT BACK MYSELF? HE HAS A HANDI IN 243 I WAS THINKING OF SEEING IF HE WILL TRADE ME AND REFUND THE DIFFERENCE. WHAT DO YOU THINK? :evil: :evil:

Do you mean the barrel is loose on the frame without the forend on??? If so, take it back, that's been a frequently reported problem!!

btw, please loose the caps, it's considered shouting and it's hard to read!!

with the forarm on it is very loose. sorry about the caps but 269.00 for a new gun thats loose who woulno t shout.......... just kidding if this normal i cool with it m but even my old wore out beat all to hell turkey nef is as tight as a bank vault. it just really seems loose to me.

Does it wiggle or just open and close easily? Opening easily can be fixed, but I'd shoot it first, some shoot good loose, some don't. Remove the forend and see it the wiggles within the frame, it should be tight with no looseness when locked up solid.

Ehhhhhhh......do not shoot this gun! If the barrel is loose with the foreend on then the gun is faulty and may even be dangerous to fire. Take it back to the dealer you got it from first and if he will not do anything about it, then your only course of action is to send it to Mass. to the H&R factory. Request a UPS call tag if you have to go this route and it will not cost you to send it to them. Good chance they will either correct the one you currently have or fit your barrel to a brand new receiver. Time consuming yes, but the outcome should be good. Such are the risks you take when purchasing H&R/NEF rifles.

I guess we have to determine what you mean by loose before you do anything. I'll reiterate, if the action opens easily, but there's no wiggle side ways, the problem can be easily fixed with a shim between the forend and spacer, about .004" will usually make a good difference in how tight it is, the factory will replace the spacer with a thicker one if you send it back. If the barrel is loose when the action is closed and wiggles when the forend is removed, you have a serious problem as Lik2hunt has mentioned.

the gun locks up tight just when the barrel is open it is loose.

If it locks up tight and there is no play in the system with the forend off and no visible gap between the barrel and the breech, you're OK.

If the barrel is only loose when it is being tilted on the hing pin then tht really is not a problem..It simply means that the forend "iron"(Plastic peice at the back) is not putting enough reaward pressure on the reciever to keep the barrel tight against the hinge pin when the barel is tilted.

While a more snug fit may make the gun feel tighter/ smoother when opened, the gun may actually SHOOT BETTER with the forearm fit that loose..Whay? because that same backward pressure that keeps the barrel from flopping around when it is opened also can cause binding and verticle stringing when the barrel is fired..

You won't know until you shot it, but one thing is for sure, if that barrel locks up tight when it is snapped into battery on the action with the forend completely off the gun, the factory fitted it right and it should shoot safely and well for what the rifle cost you.. :wink:
