Need to know how to skin a Bobcat
« on: January 28, 2006, 06:10:35 PM »
Years and years ago helped a fella skin a Bobcat.... just can't remember  the details anymore.

Don't know how far or on what "line" to start the cut on the rear end, what to do around the paws and ears.

Hey, Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cut along the white / brown fur line from one ankle to the other passing along the base of the anal vent (the end furthest from the tail; this cut is most often made in two parts starting from each ankle).  Holding the tail and starting at the top of the anal vent make a connecting cut on each side of the vent to the leg cut.

Paws on and intact for the Taxi market and off for the fur market.  On the rear legs, free the skin at or just below the ankle and pull the hide off of each leg and over the rump.  Strip the tail.  Pull the hide over the front shoulders until the front legs are located.  Insert a rod (I use a screw driver) in front of the front leg and hide coming out between the front leg and chest.  Holding both ends of the rod, pull the skin off the leg.  Repeat on the other leg.  For the fur market, make certain that you cut the fur off the front leg an inch or so below the elbow.  To do this simply ring the hide after it is pulled.  Pull the hide over the ears and cut the ears way back with a 1/4" hole for the Taxi Market;  fur market you can cut through the ear much further forward.  Finish the head and your done.

Hope this helps some.

Step Number #1

Make sure it is dead.

A friend of mine hit one with a flatbead trailer he was towing. He went back and threw it on the trailer (presumed dead) and went into town. He stoped by the local Dairy Queen, and the lady at the drive in window asked ,"Is you pet bobcat tame?" He said no, its dead, she said I don't think so. He turned just in time to see it jump off the trailer and run off. He was wondering how interesting it would have been if he had tried to skin it while it was still out.  :-D  :-D  :-D

Ah...let's see. Make mental note....cut feet/claws off first... then proceed to skin cat... yep, I got it  :)  :)
