Wool Clothing and this years Deer Hunt
« on: January 28, 2006, 06:40:25 PM »
I went to Canada this year and used a few of my new wool items in the hunt.  The best find of all was the Ulfrote wool underwear.  It comes  in various sizes and you have to look for it on the net.  It costs about $59.00 for each top and a little less for each bottom.  Before you think I am nuts listen on.  I had two sets and alternated wearing them for 6 days of hunting.  They were very warm and don't scratch.  They use a loop weave so no scratching.  They never smelled of body odor or sweat for the whole trip as advertised!!  I also purchased a 28 oz. jacket to fit over them and a fleece up.  Wore a set of  New Arctic Shield Bibs I think they are H-3's also very warm.  Sat in a treestand for 6 day in cold Canada and never got cold!!!  This is the best combination I have had so far.  I am convinced the wool underwear (Ulfrote) is the base reason and the 28 oz.  wool jacket finishes the job.  It all breathes so activity is not a super sweating event as with other synthetics I have had.  I broke down and bought a King of the Mountian  double yoked Bushman shirt, 28 oz. shirt/jacket.  Always thought they were overpriced.  They may be pricey but I am very glad it is with me and I would say they are worth every nickel( requires quite a few nickels).  This is the warmest outfit I have had so farht because and it packs in light because I don't need a lot of clothing to keep scent free.  I said I would report on the new duds so here it is.  Buckfever

The coldest morning was 0 degrees with a 15 mph wind.  I felt warm enough in this set up that I have confidence I could go -10 with only adding a wind breaker under the wool coat and a vest.  I am sure this will work for me.  By the way Fox River Outfitters have them for $49.00.

You can get the 200 g/m2 Ullfrotte wool longs at Montana Woolens for $30.  Also check out the Duofold 100% merino longs. Lightweight but very warm.  The Windsor Wear are just a little heavier but work great too.

Also try Stanfield's Superwash, a fantastic buy for $32 at Empire Canvas who also have Ullfrotte (full price).

Buck

Thanks for posting your gear used. It is always nice to hear of "field tests" and how well the gear worked. People learn from these kind of posts, me included.

Thanks for the links. I myself have been sticking with Cabelas almost exclusively, but need to explore others, as there is always other good finds out there such as the ones you posted. $32 for 90% wool longjohns is a fair price too.

I usually wear the lightweight Comfortrel polyester longs from Sierra Trading Post underneath either the Duofold merinos or Stanfields Superwash merinos.  Great combo that I believe out performs the Filson, Smartwool, Icebreaker and UnderArmour.
