Knight Disc Elite 45 cal or 50 cal
« on: January 28, 2006, 11:27:42 PM »
Noticed Basspro shops had 45 cal blued disc elites on clearance for $199. I know they were discontinued in 2005 but always wanted a scoped 50 cal for up to 200 yd hunting for deer, varmit and pig. Having a hard time finding a new 50 cal elite on clearance. I saw a 50 cal at gunbroker but the seller was questionable and the price too high.  Either the 50 cal is not available or the price is too high. Thinking of settling for the 45 cal.  I have a 50 cal Huntsman that I plan to keep with iron sights for deep woods and our iron sites only muzzleloading season.

I have heard good things and bad things concerning 45 cal. I read that all the 50 cal offerings were more accurate that the 45 cal even for the Elite which has wide acclaim for being one of the most accurate muzzleloaders out of  the box. Another reviewer was very impressed with the accuracy of the 45 cal Elite compared to other makes. I also read the 45 cal was a superior long range caliber to the 50 cal and also that it was not.

Do you guys agree or disagree there is any difference in accuracy and peformance in identical guns but different calibers (45 or 50 for this discussion). Anybody know where I can get a new blued 50 cal Disc Elite for $200 or is the 45 cal Disc Elite for $200 is as good as it gets for this model. I will keep watching gunbroker.com for now. Hate to have to maintain 2 different calibers but could live with it. Thanks in advance for any replies.

You ever thought of just getting QR rings? I've got Warne QR rings that return to zero every time.

The .45 is generally less accurate than the .50. The .45's are not as popular and so your more limited in choices. Also, Knight has discontinued most of it's .45's. There are only 2 models listed in the catalog, the Heavy Extreme .45 (one model only) and the Master Hunter .45. There is a barrel option for a .45 revolution but only if you buy the gun first and add the barrel or custom order it from Knight.

I did, but they're sold out now. Two weeks ago I could have helped you find a blued 50 Elite. :( Now your guess is as good as mine.

:D  (great gun) I don't know if the .45 is any less accurate than the .50 because I have never had a .45. I do know that a few guys I work with have .45 cal. smoke poles and they all say they wish they bought the .50. The .50 just has  a lot more umph behind it and the componets are so much more avalible. You look on the shelves in the stores you see racks of .50 calliber supplies and just a small handfull of .45 stuff.
As far as finding a Disc Elite there still out there but good luck. I bought one from www.sportsmansguide.com but they sold out a few weeks ago. They had the blued .50 for 200.00 and the stainless .50 for 250.00 I got the stainless .50. I love mine it's very accurate with 100 grains of american pioneer and a 250 grain Barnes expander.
Bass pro has been trying to sell the .45 version for 200.00 for a long time, but haven't had ANY .50's

There is currently a Disc Elite .50 w/Nikon scope listed in the classified section of the Modern Muzzleloading forum.

Thanks SMIKE308, Wolfhound and Marylandeer for the replies, I will check it out the Disc elite and scope and add to my choices. I did find a blued 50 cal Disc Elite for $220. Wanted stainless but cannot find. Basspro won't budge on the $200 for a 45 cal blue elite and $250 for a 45 cal ss. Will sleep on it and make my choice tomorrow. Another option is too save my money and check out the Long Range Hunter coming out. Does look a bit expensive and may not be much better shooter than the elite.

Well, early this morning I checked out sportsmanguide.com where Marylandeer bought his.  They showed that they had Disc Elites SS for $250 ($269 with shipping) in stock although yesterday the SS was out of stock. I bought it but after that my purchase the website showed the SS were out of stock again. They still showed the blued Disc Elites available.  Hope it was not just a hickup in their inventory system.

The elite has Weaver mounts. I now need to find a cheap varible speed scope (under $60) that will last (is this even possible). Hopefully something I can find locally at wallmart or basspro.  Any suggestions?

thanks again for the replies.
