Turkey barrel for Mossberg 500
« on: January 29, 2006, 04:55:15 AM »
This will be my 3rd season spring turkey hunting. I haven't gotten a shot yet, but I'm learning. So far,I have been using my Mossberg 500 with a fixed, fairly open choke. It is perfect for rabbits and crows, but does not pattern well past 30 yards. I also have a rifled slug barrel for the gun. I'm leaning toward another barrel for turkeys, instead of a new gun.

There seems to be some dispute over short or long barrels. I think medium to long would be best, as I also want to hunt geese with the gun. What Choke? If I get a barrel with Accu-II chokes, is the full tight enough? Can I get an aftermarket choke that screws in?

Cabellas has 24" barrels with accu II for $130. Better price elsewhere? Numrich has barrels with C-lect choke, is that tight enough?

Sights: Beads have worked ok, but I like the fibre optic rifle sights. Can they be removed for goose hunting?

Anything else I need to know about turkey shotguns?

Thanks
