I have a 1 in 12" twist Hornet barrel that I rechambered for .225Win. I'm having mixed results depending on what bullets I use. The lighter slugs in the 35-50gr range work pretty good, but the 52gr and heavier tend to be off.

With the 1 in 9" barrels becoming somewhat standard for all .223's, I was thinking about ordering a 24" bull barrel and rechambering it to .225Winny.

My main concern is, will a .225 clean up a .223 chamber? I'm sure the extra spin on the twist will help stablize the heavier slugs.

With spring coming soon and Groundhogs Day coming up, I wanna be ready for a forecast of 6 more weeks of winter. I swear if that whistlepig from 20 miles south of here calls for 6 more weeks, there will be hell to pay.

Ordering a new barrel doesn't guarantee a 1-9er... I just received my new 223 Ultra barrel a week or 10 days ago and it was old stock.. ejector and the old twist.

I suspect if you asked for one equiped with ejector/extractor or 1:9"/1:12", you could get it right now since they're switching over. They just said that all 2006 production would be 1:9" not necessarily what they have in stock. If they won't allow a specific order, I'd order the fluted which would guarantee a 1:9" twist. :wink:

I called H&R tech line the other day trying to find out if my Ultra Fluted Varmint 223 cal (SB2-F23) had the 1:9 twist and the lady told me they didn't know, she said it was either 1:9 or 1:12. I asked her if my serial number would tell by looking it up and she said no.
I told her that I bought it 02-24-05, she asked her manager and she came back and told me it was probably 1:12.
I saw on the site somewhere there was a way to check for sure what the twist rate is. Does anyone know the method? or where I can read it and perform the measurement myself?
I was hoping to try some of the heavier bullets if is was the 1:9 twist.

you guys sure know how to burst a man's bubble at times. lol

I may try a few gun shops out first to see if they have whole rifle in stock in from one of their most recent orders in a few weeks. That way I can visually inspect the candidates for 1-in-9" before buying.

I did the measurement check with my Ultra Fluted today and I came up with 1:12 on the nose.
I was hoping for the 1:9, but such is life. It shoots 1" with my blind eyes!
You guys wanting the 1:9 twist should know that it came after 02/24/05.

You are lucky you got a 1-12" twist. In a 223 Varmint rifle it is the best twist par non. Don't confuse a Handi with a target rifle.

i'm just wondering fred , why???

my 1-9 twist handi shoot light bullet good too. i havn't tried any big one's yet . can you really over spin a bullet??? i no you can blow them up sometimes but if your not then it should be ok.

Good news..

I wont have to go on a groundhog killing spree...

Although Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter, its supposed to be a "mild 6 more weeks".

I guess I can let that one go.. ..Not like last year and the year before when I had 9" of solid ice in back yard til late april and had to salt the yard to get to my car without busting my can.
